I thought I read somewhere that the sun was too small to go supernova.

It will expand into a red giant though and cook the Earth to a cinder.

You are correct. There is not enough mass for our sun to go super nova. It will, however, expand to the point where it will eat the earth.

I think the only realistic concerns for enormous human life loss are:

1. Extended cold period. This can be kicked off by a number of things. Some of them we know are just a matter of time: supervolcano eruption, asteroid impact, natural cycle. Some are not guaranteed to happen: nuclear war, drop in solar output.

2. Disease. Evolution in bacteria and viruses is considerably faster than animals. We may eventually be afflicted by something that's untreatable or balanced perfectly between deadliness and incubation period.

3. Resource depletion. If we live on Earth long enough, we're going to run out of some of the things necessary for modern life. Fossil fuels, fresh water, metals, helium, etc.

4. Supernatural. Aliens, God, Cthulhu, something we don't understand that ends our way of life.
