My top 5 (in no particular order) are:

Myth:TFL :: bungie.net was so awesome when this came out, had one of the first ranking systems in a RTS online that I can remember, plus it was just insanely fun online.

WC3 (+TFT) : played so much of this game, me and my friend got up to 18 rank in RoC, still play a ton of DOTA even now.

Desert Combat: I enjoyed this way more than any BF game to date, Berlin CTF and Stalingrad CTF were just awesome in it.

Guild Wars: I don't play it anymore, but it gave me tons of hours of entertainment.

COD4: Not sure how long this will last, but so far its been really fun.

1: Supreme Commander (Forged Alliance)
I cannot think of a better waste of my time. It's superior to every RTS I've ever played, and it's far less micro than any RTS I know of. Now, TBS, that's a different story... Civ games are far more strategic than SupCom, but I'll admit there's some charm to the robotic carnage that goes on in it that cannot be easily replaced.

2: CS:S (and the zombie mod)
Both belong together I think. I'm no pro, but I surprise people once in a while. Top form players who teach you tricks and act courteous, little whiny shits who think the game was made specifically for them, and everyone in-between make it something of a spectacle to behold. I love the community for that reason, both the trolls and the noobs even add a bit to the hilarity of it all. Hit boxes can annoy me, but not too much because I don't put all my eggs in this basket anyway. I like source because it's pretty and has more options, I don't think source takes anything away from 1.6, and I love when the "set-in-their-ways types" try to tell me otherwise.

3: Civilization games (2 multi gold, and 4 are my favs)
Real strategy, realistic, serious business. I love a good few hours of Civ with some strangers, it makes a boring afternoon something to look forward to.

4: SRO - SilkRoad Online
MMO with awesome potential. When it's working the way it should (No bots, guild wars, trade/thief conflicts, and treacherous players) it's an amazing experience. It's still beautifully drawn and designed, even by todays MMO standards. WOWO's art can't hold a candle to it. It's deep and consuming, and the grind-fest that it is can be alleviated by knowing people who will Plvl you or go on leveling parties with you. Nothing like a good pmob party of 8 quality players!

5: BF2
Besides the terrible support by EA, this game is a work of art. Awesome vehicular combat, teamwork is key if you want to win brutally, and being able to play with 64+ people on a server all make this game my favorite semi-massive team-based FPS. A classic.

TF2 sucks so hard I go to bed at night worrying about the world collapsing into it's suckitude.

I don't like TF2 either. I honestly tried to, I mean everyone else is raving about it but it is just too damn easy if you are already used to playing games like UT and CS. It is kind of like noob dm.

Try playing TF2 against people who know what they're doing.

I love how people rag on TF2 after they played the free weekend. Seems all the people who had no opinion suddenly know all the ins and outs of the game and how easy it is after playing on servers with tons of other noobs.

well I tried it for on and off for a couple of months early this year. I don't claim to be a pro at it but it just seemed too simple.

'Simple?' You say it is simple, yet you compare it to frag 'em ups like UT/CS. The game is objective based and is very challenging if you play on good servers with people that know the maps, class strengths/weaknesses, etc. Goldrush is REALLY tough against people who know how to defend effectively. I've seen many a game won with the bomb right in front of the control point because of a quickly organized stonewall.
Edit: Just realized my posts were off topic-ish. Here's my list:
1. TF2
2.F.E.A.R. Combat
3. C&C3
4. CoH
That's all the games I play online, really.

Call Of Duty 4 - I haven't played much else online since I got this game. Super fun, very deep, lots of different ways to do well. I like that it's one of the few FPSs where snipers don't have an unfair advantage. In fact, many sniper-oriented maps seem to have more sniper hunters than snipers themselves, a testament to the power of non-sniper weapons. Now that I know the maps really well, I enjoy it more, and I find myself able to get some kills that just a month ago would have seemed impossible.

Mario Kart Wii - The Wii's online mode leaves something to be desired, but Mario Kart is about as good as it gets (so far). Racing is more forgiving of lag than other games, and there's no better game for online play than Mario Kart, where crashing into your opponents is not only allowed, but encouraged. "Realistic" racers are fun, but when people bump you off the road, it's just cheap. Mario Kart works in ways that other online racers don't. EDIT: I realize this isn't a PC game, but oh well.

Warcraft III (Special modes only) - I can't stand RTS games, but Warcraft 3 has a nice big modding community. I personally like Battleships myself. Not as big a fan of DOTA, even though that seems to be the really popular one. But whenever I fire up a Battleships server, I can always fill it, so I know I'm not alone.

Honestly, I haven't played much online lately. I do have Team Fortress 2 and Counter-Strike: Source, but I don't play them anymore since I got CoD4. TF2 messes me up something terrible - I'm lucky to end a round with a 1:5 k/d ratio. And CS:S is just too old and tired... CoD4 does basically everything the same way, but better.

Lets see, at the present time (my list of favorites changes rather frequently, thus this list is comprised of the games that are most often near the top) and in no particular order I would say the following:

World in Conflict: I saw some others like this game enough to put it on their top 5. We should exchange in game SN's so we can meet up sometime. Mine's DrummingDS1.

CoD4: It's a solid online shooter. I really like the Hardcore mode, and it's really all I play. It's tactical, but still fast-paced, and thus very intense especially on smaller servers. Hate the frag spamming though.

TF2: I really enjoy this game. All the classes are incredibly diverse and yet perfectly balanced, IMO. Getting together with the other AT folks on the weekends is always a blast.

Sins of a Solar Empire: Sure, the games tend to take several hours, and thus I can't play it as often as I'd like, but the exceptionally unique gameplay is great fun.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory: The spy vs. mercenary gameplay is extremely satisfying. I haven't played this game in quite a while, but I've spent so much time playing it that I felt I had to put it up here. It's quite competitive since the active community is so small. Everyone knows each other, it's actually rather odd. Haha. For those who enjoy any incarnation of the Splinter Cell spy vs. mercenary action, check out Project Stealth. It's a total conversion mod for UT3 (Yeah, I know. :p) that is being made by a group of dedicated fans from the Pandora Tomorrow/Chaos Theory crew. It's coming along quite nicely.

1- TF 2
2- BF 2
3- World in Conflict
4- Sins of a Solar Empire
5- CoD 4

-Edit- OP might want to have a look at AvP 2. It's old by now (dated graphics, but that doesn't matter when a alien lunges at your face from the dark) BUT the MP mode "last man standing" with aliens is just awesome.

16 players start out as marines, you rush to grab weapons and find a defensible position (some team work required), randomly one of the marines turns into a alien (usually before everyone joins up), who ever the alien kills turns into a alien (they need to respawn). The last marine to die wins.

Very interesting so far guys, keep your favorites comin'! And please, if at all possible, no honorable mention, try your best to stay with a maximum of five mentioned titles :) I know it's tough but I'm sure you can, I myself could have mentioned twenty games at least but I just took my five favorites.

I'm taking some notes right now, there's a few games in here which I've never tried on-line and I'm seriously thinking going out and buying myself a few of them, including World in Conflict and maybe Age of Mythology.

I typed up an all-time favorite list like many others, but then I noticed the OP wanted current favorites. I presume console is included. I *really* haven't played lots of multiplayer lately, but here goes:

Starcraft
Counterstrike (non-Source)
Singstar (nothing comes close for multiplayer with non-gamers)
World of Warcraft (battlegrounds, instancing with IRL friends)
Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution

1. Rocket Arena 3
2. Quake
3. Quake Wars Enemy Territory
4. Company of Heroes
5. Counterstrike (both)

The only ones I really play now are #s 2 and 3 but man Rocket Arena 3 in its heyday was an easy way to burn 20 hours in one weekend. Damn shame about RA4.

Ugh, especially on Wetworks. I enjoy that map quite a bit when it's not a grenade spamfest.

1. Planetside - Absolutely insane battles on a scale that still haven't been surpassed 5 years later. Some MMO elements like EXP, Rank, and weapon/item/vehicle unlocks that you see in more recent FPS. Purists might have been turned off by the lack of hit boxes and the console-ish cone of fire on rifles, but there's little doubt this game required both twitch skills and tactical strategy in order to excel.

2. Soldier of Fortune 2 - Best purist multiplayer FPS imo, as it was a perfect mix of realism and insanity. All weapons were lethal with excellent maps that were truly 3D. Character control and hit boxes were much better than other games of the time. Also included a great feature that most FPS don't have, but should, the "kill chime".

3. Diabo 2 PreLoD Hardcore - This was probably the first taste of MMO that I got, even though it wasn't really an MMO and was free. I remember when this game first launched and the excitement of seeing so many people in the lobby with varying levels and armor. Seemed like the entire gaming world was on B.net trying to get into a game. Had a blast playing Hardcore with a tight-knit bunch at the top of the US-East Ladder. Everyone tried helping everyone else out and the death of a ladder King/Queen was a really sad event lol.

4. Multi-Player Battletech 3025 (MPBT 3025) - MMO BTech sim that never made it out of Beta, sadly. The game itself was incredible and ready to launch, but EAOnline ran into some financial problems and possibly legal issues with MS and the BTech license. Still, the game is what I wish the MW series was online. 4v4 drops were intense even in Light mechs but dropping Heavies against some Devs in 100-ton Assaults was truly epic. Had everything Btech fans wished for, ability to purchase Mech stables, rank progression, planetary assault engine, House factions, etc.

5. FFXI - PvE focused MMORPG. It was my first MMO and I've yet to find another MMO that offered as much challenge and excitement against strictly PvE content. This game really makes every other MMO seem like Easy mode, as pretty much everything is a grind or incredibly difficult requiring grouping. Still, some of the best boss fights and a very complicated, if not overly rigid combat system. If you're accustomed to the instant-gratification of western MMOs like WoW, LOTRO and now AoC, this game will frustrate you to no end.

I've played most of the other top picks from others but still haven't found one recently that makes me bust out laughing from the on-screen carnage or catch myself with my jaw dropping in awe. Lots of good ones that I play now, but the ones above are my all-time favorite.

1. BF2 (including Forgotten Hope)
2. CoD4
3. Diablo II
4. Company of Heroes
5. Red Orchestra

That's current games. For my favorite MP game of all time, I think I'm going to have to say Starsiege: Tribes. It was just so incredibly awesome - the classes were actually different in their abilities/looks/weapons/movement, it had some great teamplay elements, and the mods for it kicked ass too.
