Doom
Half Life
Call of Duty

and Duke Nukem 3D and Wolf3D gets honorable mention. Unreal should probably be on this list too. Quake 2 best alltime for multiplayer.

1. Counter-Strike (yes, I know, typical :) )
2. Soldier of Fortune 2
3. Wolfenstein 3D (for 3DO... not spectacular, but I had loads of fun playing it before I got into PC gaming)

*EDIT* By the way... when the hell is the price of Call of Duty going to drop? Damn it's expensive... Far Cry is already cheaper...

*Disclosure* I don't claim to be an FPS now-it-all, and haven't played everything.

I am surprised nobody who mentioned console games said Perfect Dark. IMO, that game took Goldeneye and made it what it should have been. I will grant that Goldeneye was more innovative, but PD had things like the ability to fall off a walkway to the levels below, and the ability to play multiplayer against bots whom you could set to all kinds of fun AI tendencies/levels.

My personal other two would be HL and BF1942.

SWScorch:
Descent 3

Woah - someone else who loved this title :D
I still play it regularly.

I just wasn't sure it would fit into the FPS class - but I suppose it does and should have added it to my list

1) Wolf3D (I played this when I was like 4 or 5...my god it scared the crap out of me...though it kind of ruined the shock of Doom/Doom2)
2) Goldeneye 64 (man I played multiplayer with my friends for SOOOO many hours)
3) Half-Life (ehh just because...it's good)

Honorable Mentions:
Tribes
Call of Duty
Serious Sam (so much killing!)

1) Duke Nukem 3D
2) Half Life
3) Quake

My reasons :

Duke is just such a fun game to play, i love a sense of humour in a game, and of all the fps games, this is the one i still play.

Half Life has so many cool mods, was never a big cs fan, but i loved team fortress and deathmatch classic

Quake is probably the fps i've played the most, when i was the helpdesk manager for GT Interactive in the UK, i had plenty of reasons to play this game, seeing as we supported the game. Imagine an office with 8 people who would boot up their computers in the morning, and load quake before the important things like their email and helpdesk software !
