The Mote in God's Eye - Niven & Pournelle - Mankind's first contact with an Alien Race, sequel is called "The Gripping Hand"
These 2 are excellent writers - also recommend "Footfall", a War of the Worlds type story by them

Greg Benford is my favoriate Sci-Fi author, along with Arthur C Clarke - they collaborated on "Beyond the Fall of Night", which is excellent.
His Galactic Center series are all very good as well.

Nightfall, by Isaac Asimov, my favorite book by him, would make a great movie too.

I think there are 3 versions of Nightfall listed on IMDB (based on the Asimov book)...all of them are pretty sad wastes of film :(

quote: The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers

This book was one of the most entertaining books I ever read, it is neither sci-fi or fantasy really, more like science gothic history, now THAT would make a good movie.

Most of mine are already listed, like the Hyperion series, Mars trilogy (Stan Robinson lives in Davis California, met him when I lived there), Card's sci-fi/fantasy works (not as keen on his 'historical' or 'Mormon' books), Dune series, stuff by David Brin, Asimov, Bradbury, etc. Some others I've enjoyed that I didn't notice listed include Lois McMaster Bujold's "Vorkosigan" series, David Gerrold's "Chtorr" series (that is out of print and the bastard hasn't finished yet, don't think he ever will finish it). I've started reading more fantasy lately (Ice & Fire series, Wheel of Time series, etc) and am just starting to get to where I can read them and not feel a little embarrassed. Sometimes I feel like I've been caught reading some cheap harlequin romance when people see me reading fantasy.

David Brin is another good author

My all-time Fav is "The Boat of a Million Years" by Poul Anderson - sort of a Highlander-like story about a group of Immortals, traces their story from man's early history to it's future, it's great

My vote for the Mote. Never read the sequel. I think I will give it try.
