Madden

I'm old (33) and don't have time for other games...

the rest are games from the late 90s (college years) and they are the classic FPS games for the PC.

No, you don't. Halo (released 2001) is a FPS console game that failed in comparison with the best FPS on a PC made at that point, Half Life (released 1998). The only people that think Halo is a top 10 game of all time are ones that started off on consoles. I have yet to meet anyone that picks Halo on an XBox over some of the FPS of that day from a PC. Halo may have been a great and fun game on the XBox, but it did not compare to other computer games.

It is enjoyable on a console but the pc games out then were better. Half Life 1 single player was fantastic and their multiplayer was great along with Counter Strike which was a mod.

I played Halo and as fun as it was, it just did not have the appeal Half Life did. I have not seen anyone that started out with FPS pc games to include Halo into a top 10. Joph may be the first one I have seen to include a Halo game if they started out on pc games. Halo 2 was his pick though, which was a good game as well.

Here is another issue with Halo from a quick jump to metacritic:

XBox version with a 97 and a user rating of 8.1

PC version with a 83 and a user rating of 6.4

The pc version lacked apparently. I played the pc version more than the XBox. Then again this was the XBox game to have and everyone had it and thinks it is the greatest just like Nintendo fans love Mario.

I read a review and this one hit the differences pretty well.

It also didn't come to PC until two years after its original Xbox release and was a pretty bad port IIRC. My only exposure to the first Halo was on the PC, needless to say that didn't last long.

i started off playing pc fps shooters first. i played halo2 for like 3 years straight. thus being in my top 5.

games in my top 5 are mostly based on there multiplayer experiance.

other than that qwtf was my most played game ever. i played that competitivly for 6-7 years. then played q3tf....

but halo2 with friends lan or xbl with them was a top5 experiance for me,

if i had to take a timeline of major fps it would look like this

doom ---- quake dm/ctf ---- qwtf ---- counter strike --- q3tf ----- halo2 ---- halo3 ---- cod4 ----- cod:waw ----- mw2 ----- bad company2

plus mix is some others that i played along the way. never really got into team fortress 2 though.. ive slowed done.

as you can see around halo2 i switch over to consoles... pc was to expensive to maintain. after going console i never looked back.

Not sure I agree with mixing the two, so I'll drop my lists ...

PC:
  • X-Wing / TIE Fighter
  • Dark Forces / Jedi Knight
  • Quake 2
  • Red Alert
  • Falcon 4.0
  • Call of Duty
  • System Shock 2
  • Total Annihilation
  • Dark Age of Camelot (This is my personal preference due to PvP, but you could swap WoW or UO)
  • Grand Theft Auto

Console:
  • Super Mario Brothers 3 (NES)
  • Pirates! Gold (Genesis)
  • Tetris (NES)
  • Knights of the Old Republic (XBOX)
  • Call of Duty 4 (360)
  • GoldenEye (N64)
  • NBA JAM
  • Grand Theft Auto III (PS2)
  • Mortal Kombat 3 (SEGA)
  • Metroid II (Gameboy)

and he forgot we're in the CONSOLE forum

So if someone wanted to start a thread about your favorite games of all time, and include not just console or PC but both, they don't have a place to post that thread? Would they have to make an elaborate cross-post in both forums?

no but he was surprised about why the #1 FPS CONSOLE franchise was not on any lists in a thread about top 10 games in the CONSOLE forum and then some PC fanboy had to try and break it down to him, in false terms as well, talking about it failing.

Given the prevalence of PC games in the lists posted in this thread, I'd say he isn't too far off base, at least in terms of the original Halo not standing out to people that have played a lot of PC FPS's. Hell, I've never even really played Halo 1 or 2.

I've hated Halo since the first time I played it and never gotten over my dislike of it. And I probably played it before anyone else in this forum so I didn't base my opinion on anything I'd heard beforehand. I gave the game a chance to going so far as to beat the single player campaign. But I definitely feel that dude was right when he said it didn't even compare to Half-Life, a game that came out 3 years earlier.

OP, you've left it wide open by including both PC and console games in your poll. My votes are:

Console (Atari 800): MULE

PC: Homeworld
