One thing I notice when seeing these lists is that us old timers sure do paint a picture of awesome when referring to our gaming youth. The kids today must think they're missing out on so much when the newest titles on these lists are like PS1.

I'm guilty too but I think it has more to do with nostalgia than the quality of the game itself. For example, Chrono Trigger and Zelda:OOT will always rank highly for me. But are they really better than Mass Effect 2? God of War? Uncharted 2? Hell I don't know... but it sure is fun to talk about.

Some off the top of my head:
Twisted Metal 2 (best vehicle combat game to date. The prequel and sequels just weren't as fluid and exciting)
Super Metroid (Duh. Took the fun and exploration of Metroid and expanded on it)
Zelda: LTTP (Played it so many times I'll have to wait a few years before picking up again.)
Banjo Kazooie (the 1st one on N64. I thought it was genius.)
Super Mario 64 (I was amazed at what the N64 could do when I walked by a kiosk with a demo of this game.)
Hexen II (It was the first game of this type I'd played! I got it on a PC Gamer demo disc and later got the full copy. I still like it better than Doom, Quake, etc)
Final Fantasy III (bought it on a whim for $69.99 and didn't "get it" at first. It was my first real RPG)
Final Fantasy VII (I played this for almost a year!)
Burnout Paradise (Never been a fan of racing games, this had a great mix of arcade and racing. I go back to it once in a while.)
Karnov (Arcade version. I spent a ton of quarters on it as a kid. Got a full cabinet and now play it for free.)
U.N. Squadron (Another arcade one I've bought. The only arcade game I "finished" as a kid.)
Killer Instinct (My #3 arcade game, bought this one a while back too. Never was a fighting game fan other than SFII, but this had a great combo system and I loved the visuals.)

I'm sure there are more, but I could go on and on.
These are just the ones I could play again today(some I do) and still enjoy.
There are alot of games I liked when I was younger but can't stand to play now.

Hey, someone else who likes FF8! I thought it was alot better than 7 (although Materia was a fantastic idea).

Oh, I owned an original NES and played plenty of SNES games and such, just happens that most of the games I really liked were newer.
