Your thoughts on the HAZE review article?

Just thought I see who out there is playing Haze and contrast your thoughts and mine. I'm the author, by the way, and new to the community. Feel free to comment on the review as well.

I think its a 6.0-7.0 game

"He" would be me. : ) Yes, I thought it was actually a pretty good attempt. I did detect some uncanny similarities between it and Resistance. The assault rifle feels like it was borrowed from the game. The feel and even the bullet stream was dead on.

Welcome. 🙂

Video game reviews are a dime a dozen on the net, but on the other hand, the reviewer coming into the forums and discussing his review is pretty rare. If you guys are going to launch a new segment of the site I'd hope it would offer something unique. If you were to say, post your review, discuss it with the forums, and then post an addendum after a week or so discussing the reactions, feedback, issues, comments etc forumgoers make, that would be pretty sweet and most definitely unique and worth reading.

My first thought was "wtf is Haze?"

My second thought was "That game looks pretty good, I wish I had a PS3"

Thanks! Actually, I think that the discussion section within each article would serve as the addendum. And I'm very much involved in that. Also, I want to make it clear that I'm a gamer first and foremost, and I love good discussions. So I'll be in and out of the forums. This is where the real reviews are.

Lots of PC jocks hanging around that scoff at all things console. While I do play PC games and have a decent rig that I built, I'd be lost without my 360 and PS3. And I plan to write articles that appeal to gamers on both sides of the fence.

LOL! Just don't let HAZE be the reason you decide to get one. Here are the reasons you should own one.

Resistance: Fall of Man
MotorStorm
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Ninja Gaiden Sigma

And coming soon . . .

Infamous
LA Noire
Resistance 2
Killzone 2
Jak & Daxter: The Lost Fontier
MotorStorm: Pacific Rift
Metal Gear Solid 4
Heavy Rain

I could go on!

Off-topic I guess... but have any notable RPGs yet been released for the PS3? Or any on the horizon? I ask because I'm still on the fence about what console to buy. And having "good" RPG game options will be a factor in my console choice.

About your review article on Haze: I liked it! I would be interested in reading more from you.

That is totally ot but White knight looks good, Disgaea3. FFXIII won't be out until at least christmas 09 probably later. There's some other ones but honestly it seems like 360 has all the good rpgs right now with even more on the horizon.

Sounds like this one will be a rental, and will be just for a co-op play through or 2.

I havent read the article just yet, but will do some time today.

As far as Haze goes--it awful. I just could not play it any longer than roughly 2 hours. The voice acting is horrendous, the in-game (HL2 inspired) cutscenes are boring, the graphics are disappointing by today's standards, the enironmental design is dull and uninspired and the weapons are standard FPS fare with nothing unique to offer--not even alt fires.

The whole Nectar drug (juiceing--har har, we get it) thing had its potentiol with possible varying story arcs, but that was missed by Radical. It's been known what the big reveal in the game is (but I wont spoiler it here just incase) and it would have been more interesting if that was an option and not forced.

Too bad for I was interested in checking out the co-op in this game.

One thing that I've always disliked about many reviews is that there's not enough personal opinion in them, instead its full of "this game's features are..." which most of I can read on the back of a box. I'd prefer it if the focus was on specifics "what I liked, what I didn't like" instead of wading through a long list of features. You don't get much of an opinion until the third page of this review and even then, its more of factual information instead of personal opinion. Your review is well written, don't get me wrong, its just not really what I look for in a review... but maybe I'm a minority.

sidenote: I really hate those links where you hover over them and get a floating ad.

Good article & welcome the forums. I only have a 360 at the moment. I'll probably pickup a PS3 as a blu ray player and for a couple games this winter. I was looking at possibly getting a PS3 after my latest RROD. Fortunately MS was quick on the turn around so I'll hold out for a few more months (until another price drop).

Based on your review and others I won't be playing Haze. Quick question... why would the developer come out supporting PC, Xbox 360, PS3 and then go to PS3 exclusivity shortly before the release. Was there a payoff from Sony? If so, they should get a refund and tell them to go multi-platform because the game sounds mediocre at best.

EDIT>>>

Oh yeah.... I was a PC only gamer for the last 10+ years. I went to a 360 last year and have only gamed once on my PC since. I'm glad anandtech is doing console reviews now too because I don't tend to read the other articles as much as I used to.

Although I havent had a chance to play the game, the overall impression I'm getting from everywhere on the net is that its a very bland game that does nothing exceptionally well, but is still a functional shooter. IMO a game like that is useless. Theres plenty of better games on the PS3, dozens to hundreds of great games released each year, and a backlog of 20+ years of video gaming where I'm sure theres a fantastic game that you've yet to try out. Theres SO MANY incredible games out there that I cant even imagine why anyone would want to spend the money, let alone the time, playing something "meh" when you could be playing something awesome. Whether its a 4 or a 6 or a 7 is irrelevant - if it isnt fantastic, it isnt worth your money, because theres enough fantastic stuff out there that IS (and is probably much cheaper). The fact that its new shouldnt mean anything. Sure, renting will save you $50 or so, but why even rent a meh game when theres better stuff out there to rent?

Thanks for the compliment! Yes, there is at least one cool looking RPG on the way. It's called The Agency. While RPG's aren't really my cup of tea, this one looks pretty cool. Check out this 4-part video walkthough.

In a sea of mediocre shooters, you have to call them like you see them. BlackSite Area 51 barely met the mediocre point for me, while Denied Ops just plain sucked, as did SoF Payback. Haze is actually on the better shooters that I have played in a while. While I referred to it as decent and garden variety, it's actually an enjoyable game. Maybe a rainy day game when there's nothing better to play, but it wasn't bad by any means. If you happen upon it at a cheap used price, it might be worth your time. It definitely kept me playing until the end, which is more then I can say for a lot of FPS's out there.

You hit the nail right on the head! You should have seen my first revision of the R6 Vegas 2 review that AT posted a while back. It was much more enjoyable read and had a lot more of myself injected into it. But Anand prefers that we lay out the details bit by bit. Discuss what works and what doesn't. It's a totally different writing style for me, and it definitely makes for a less "enjoyable" read IMO. But that's what the community has focused on forever and that's what I was hired to write. If you ever check out the blog posts, I plan to start writing a few that contain previews and quick impressions of games that should be right up your alley. Mine too!

Thanks a bunch! Regarding your Sony question, you can bet there was a sizeable payoff. For a developer to to axe the potential revenue that a 360 or PC version would have brought in, it had to be very attractive. Sadly, what ever it was, it wasn't worth it. Not for Sony.

These days, I play more console games than I do PC games. Mainly because I have a GameFly account with new stuff coming in the mail constantly. But also since there really is a shortage of games comng out on PC that interest me. For multiplatform rleases, I usually go with the 360 version because of the friends I play with online. I just finished up Overclocked: A History of Violence, but before that, the last PC game I played was Crysis. And it wasn't all that great.

A colleague here got it at launch and his comment was, 'Single player is not compelling and MP is terrible. I'll be trading it in this coming weekend.'.
