Your thoughts on Rise of Nations?

The initial reviews I have read give the game great marks (Gamespot gave it a 9.3/10).

Unfortunately, I have always found my interest to fade fast in RTS games because I don't enjoy the micro-management required and it's more or less about how fast you can click the mouse.

Not sure if I'll be picking it up yet.....

ahh man .. just finished playing 2 hours of it. Yesterday i tinkered with it a teeny. This game is so awesome. There is so much management that i almost went insane. I went and built my army and upgraded through the ages and everything. But i forgot to keep hitting them and taking land. In the end, they whooped my ass =(.

I also learned the need to evenly space out the cities and to develop the land and architeture in harmony. Patch work jobs of buildings and such will only hurt you at the end. I learned the hard way. I thought i did very well for my 1st full game. I lost and it was on easy =(.. lol

Friend is gonna come over and borrow my disc and we are gonna try multiplayer, hopefully this weekend. LoL, my gf was watching for a bit and went home to do a painting, but she said she wanted to try it and play. It's that interesting.

Great GAME!

if you hate micro management you are gonna really hate this game. i played the tutorial mission, there's simply too many things to do at once, there are like 5-6 different kind of resources, all kinds of research and improvements and then you have to manage your army. yes this is the tutorial i'm talking about here. i won but it was stressful.

Civ 3 and Age of empires put together in one game, what else can you ask for in a turn-based game?
There is so much depth to this game it will keep you busy for months. Be warned, you might have to pull a few all nighters when you first try out this game. *Yawns.

This is one great game. I just got it this weekend and started playing the first of the tutorial where I can do anything. The game lasted over 2 hours, where I ended up taking over 70% of the land at the modern age, OMG, the nukes in this game are so realistic!

So now i'm on the World Conquest campaign, a bit different, but I love the way this game is detailed to the bone.

btw: i'm the aztecs, woot

danny~!

lol, you sound like me, read above =D

Doing the World Conquest wit the Mongols. Taken all of Asia, Europe and Africa. The Greeks are holding North and South America. Gonna crush them.

so far this game rocks.
the tutorials are quite good. the "risk" world conquest is very fun and different. it's a lot like age of empires but much better in the technology progression. i'm kicking butt on easy right now and it's probably time to up the difficulty.

I usually don't like RTSes either because they are click fests and you have to do a million things at once. But you can slow this game down to a crawl if you want and you can even do some managing while paused and both those things are very nice to anyone who is fond of turned based games. Slowing it down is great so that you can catch up on growing your cities or manage a battle better. The conquest mode ala Risk is a great twist on RTS gaming. It's a very good game, I'd say at least try out the demo.

Only 2 'gripes' I have is it needs one more zoom in/out and I hate the way they setup research (just like all the other RTS) you have to go to the specific buildings to conduct research, whereas a game like CIV it's all done in one place.

But paperfist, like 90% of the upgrades (all the big ones), are done at the Library.

I love this game. It has taken the best parts of AoE and made them better.

The graphics are very impressive too.

My only gripe is that you cannot save MP games; but the dev's have said a future patch will fix this.

played on hard and got butt kicked. hahahha .. didn't help that my gf was breathing down my neck to finish and go to the movies.

It's a lot of fun BUT it can be stressful and exceedingly difficult on moderate difficulty! Man, I quit a world conquest on moderate after failing twice to defeat two ai teamed against me. Ouch! Both times the fights laster over an hour and I failed not because they crushed me, but because I just couldn't kill them in time. I need to supply my invading troops better I think (attrition hurts). And build more trebuchets 😉

Anyone managed to defeat Xerxes and Darius AI on "The Steppes" on moderate diffculty? I was the Chinese.

Just started another World Conquest as the Romans, defeated the Alps so far 😛. Very easy: survive against attacks of 1-2 units at a time for 15mins. Oh, and I slaughtered an easy AI as the Nubians in quick battle. I love how each race's units may be named the same, yet look so unique. Aztecs and Mayans look mean with those giant feathers and stuff, Nubians are, naturally, all black. Nice, accurate detail. 😀

Multiplayer over LAN doesn't work for me: "Waiting for <player>". It's a known issue though, patch 2 will include a fix for it.

As with all RTS games, with the exception of Kohan, clicking speed makes up 75%, or more, of your effectiveness. It's a shame, but I think I can overcome that flaw because RoN really is a very well made game. Definately deserves plenty of awards.

Hey, I'm a really fast clicker once I get the interface down pat, but aren't there keyboard shortcuts in that game too 🙂

Well yeah, but it's still about clicking when you get down to the bone.

Suppose i'll work more at the keyboard shortcuts though 🙂

Don't get me wrong, I can click quickly. I'm simply not enthused with how much success rides on it.

Speaking of quick clicking, when you end a game (at least in MP LAN), there is an 'Achievements' window, similar to the one in AoE which lets you see how fast you were to what age, and how many buildings you razed, etc. There is a new screen in that that shows how many times you clicked, how many times you clicked in the minimap, etc. It is pretty funny to see that I clicked like 3K times in 1 hour.

well if clicking speed didn't matter, you'd have a turn based game😛 no more "R"eal "T"ime
"S".

Down loaded the demo last night and I have been playing quick battles.

Damn this game ROCKS.

I think I am gonna buy it.

Is multiplayer good (I think they use the zone)

Even though this is a MS published game, it doesn't use the zone unfortunately. It uses that gamespy crap so I doubt you'd fine very many players to play with. Also it seems like the netcode is not very good. Because multiplayer play seem laggy especially in coop mode. MS is aware of this and supposedly there's a patch coming out. When is anyone's guess. There is no single player campaign to play if you consider the "Risk" game a campaign. It really is just the same scenarios played out over and over again.

If you are looking for an RTS that has a decent single player campaign, i'd recommend age of mythology over this game.

I am loving the quick battle feature.

My only question about it is that if can you turn off the win with wonder portion.

Once a get a huge army built up and grab about half the comps cities they just start building wonders.

I don't have enough pesents so I get "out wondered" If I can turn that off I will def. Buy this game.

I am surpriced by how many people like the game.

I liked it... but... after finishing World Conquest Mode once. It just doesn't hold much apeal. Towards teh end it seems like you just repeading every step again and agian. Fun for a while... but I doubt I'll play much more off it.

Little things that bugged me.

In World conquest mode you can only attack one Nation per turn. That kinda slows possibilitys down quite a bit. Wished it would be different.
