Apparently my coworker's not a fan. I forwarded him the clip of the civil engineer's rendition of "She Bangs", and said, "This is what you missed on AI last night."

He replied:

"somehow, I don't think I missed anything. I have never watched that show, other than the promos I'm forced to watch as a consequence of watching the idiot box in general, and I don't plan on it now.

I cannot stand "reality" tv. there's nothing real about it. It's just a cheap form of entertainment. That's the only reason it's taken off. all the money that would have spent on professional actors is spent on publicity and public relations to convince the dim witted masses that they MUST not miss the next episode of American Idol, Survivor, Fear Factor etc.

wake up and don't be a tool of the corporate media machine all your life."

I was just trying to get him to crack a smile. :(

I want someone to define "reality TV" and differentiate it from "Game Shows". Was "Star Search" reality TV? If not, why is American Idol?

I can see calling things like "The Surreal Life" Reality TV, but since when are shows with contestants competing for something NOT game shows?

Anyway, I like American Idol, but haven't seen any other 'reality TV' that I like.

Most reality TV is garbage. Its just an easy way for networks to put out programs that don't cost them hardly anything and they get mad cash for them. If their lamest new idea doesn't catch on its easy to dump and move to something else because you're not paying actors or writers, etc..

Survivor is just about the only one I can stand.

I hate extreme reality TV that profit on the grief and humiliation of people like surviver or fear factor.

The only show like that i have ever watched is American Idol, which i don't put in the same category. It's funny. I'm sure most of the people auditioning know that they suck, but they get to be on TV and it's something to remember... a story for the grandkids.. lol

There is a point when "reality tv" becomes too scripted. Survivor, Fear Factor, The Mole; these have become other than "reality tv". I hardly consider American Idol a "reality" show... or I consider it as much a "reality" show as The Gong Show.

Big Brother, The Apprentice, American Chopper, these I consider reality shows.

It depends. I liked Real World back in the day, and sometimes I like American Idol, but Survior, Big Brother, joe millionaire, bachelor..you can TELL the dialogue is scripted. In general, reality tv caters to the masses, and the mass is pretty stupid. But, its entertainment for most folks I suppose.

There is two kinds of reality TV in my opinion. Cops and similar shows are OK - they aren't scripted, no one auditioned to be on, etc. The Survivor and American Idol type of shows don't interest me in the least. It makes me think "Look at the depths that people will sink to, just to get on television." It's like lonely little kids who will take any dare, because they think the other kids will like them if they would just eat that worm or pick up dog crap with their bare hands.

I think reality shows suck, and about 90% of everything else too. They should have a pop-up blocker equavalent for TV where you block the most inane programs.

I despise most of the reality TV shows. I watched the first Survivor and didn't think too much of it but I think the Apprentice isn't bad. The one reality show that does keep my interest is the Real World. I've seen a couple of the seasons and am watching the current one, this is usually good for a few laughs and this season looks especially good to me.

And Dezign, wake up and don't be a tool of the corporate media machine all your life!!!

Reality TV = Fantasy TV

You want a Survivor based on reality? Put those people in a small town with only the clothes on their backs. Make them find jobs, get their own place to stay, get transportation, eat, etc.

The one who does the best is the winner. And none of that bullsh!t back-stabbing crap they do to vote someone off. Make it based on accomplishments.

And The Bachelor? How is that reality? If it was reality, then every guy in the nation would have a bevy of silicone-injected women to pick from.

Heh. I've always wanted Survivor: Harlem, Survivor: South Central LA, or Survivor: West Philadelphia. That'd be entertainment.
