Your Teen's first car?

Any fuel efficient SUV? That way it's less prone to roll overs due to being fuel efficient since it's likely smaller but at the same time is less likely to go under a Semi Trailer hitch...

Well, w/that safety disclaimer in there, that makes it difficult.

Unfortunately, gone are the days when we started driving. 🙂 You'd get a big old Pontiac Bonnevile or something like that. Big old hunk of steel.

These days, aside from SUVs, all cars are tiny.

My thoughts are: Get something used, slightly dented and scratched. You know it's gonna get bashed up within the first 6 months he/she's driving it. 😉

I got a Toyota Camry 94 whe I was in highschool. Safe, not tooo bad on the gas for the year, and a good size.

Now I have a 93 SE camry. I would go with them..or atleast look into it...cheap and safe.

I have no kids, but... I would get him/her something reliable that would serve well as basic transportation. Then they get to pay for gas + insurance, and I wouldn't hesitate to revoke driving privilege if necessary.

if i had a child or even for my younger sister, id vote for honda civic

why?

because that was my first car as well. god damn what it has been thru and running great till this day still amazes me. that car is built like a rock (well i dont know how the new gen. civics are). it has been thru every scenerio you can think of (accidents, going off road accidently, racing the engine) and the only thing we had to replaced till this day (at 75k) is front bumper, and front axles.

i also have worked at honda service dept so i know how they work behind the desk. and i tell yea, honda gives customer the top priority. i am no honda lover, or bias but i have to admit that honda really cares about its customer.

when i worked there i seen some people do stupid ****** to their cars, LIED and still honored their warranty. prime example i still remember tilll this day.

a kid had a s2000, raced the engine, destroyed pistons, engine block, basically the whole engine by downshifting too early. brought it to the dealer, LIED that '****** i dunno how it happened, i was just at a stop light and it happened while starting off blah blah'. the technician read the ecu and it clearly showed he was racing the engine. yet honda america still honored his warrranty as goodwill and replaced the engine/labor cost free!

that douche destroyed the engine 2nd time! i dunno what they did to it afterwards. but thats one example.

there are so many examples i can give, but honda service dept really helps you out if you car gets in a major problem even after warranty. afterall service is the only thing you can rely on after you have purchased a car.

so i guess here is my indepth review on my first car option. =)

honda fit is not bad either, its already been out for 4+yrs in japan, so you know there will be no 1st yr problems, and its made in japan. so a very good car plus the next best thing for the upcoming generation.

and honda's 4cyl technology/transmission are far superior/advanced than what other leaders offer in the same class. just research everything upclose, visit some car forums and decide for yourself. second car i would go w/ is a toyota.

Have fun paying for insurance.

I don't see why kids can't buy their own first cars..

neighbors son bought it (19 yrs old in KS) - same insurance as a ford escort and 1999 civic ... so unless u have priced it .. shut up ...

My first car was a '41 Hudson. Very roomy & great for drive-in movies. Gasoline was <$0.25 per gallon then 🙂

Get him/her a 4 year old Corolla. Give it a full service and new tires=done.

I'd be trying to keep my teenager away from the mall! And I'd hope my teen wouldn't need to drop their kids off at soccer practice.

They're still quite available. I'd hit up the used car lots and buy exactly that - a steel slab on four wheels. Bonneville, Caprice, old Buick ... 😀
