Your Resolution?

Hey guys, I was just wondering what your resolutions were because i want to optimize mine but im not sure how. I have a samsung syncmaster 710n (17" lcd) with a recommended resolution of 1280x1024 @ 75 Hertz (i think it says on the box), but my computer/graphics card only seems to be able to go up to 72 Hertz (check sig for computer). If i go to a lower resolution, i can get higher refresh rates, but the quality is dumbed down. Should i game at the native resolution? i heard alot of people go with 1024x768 @ (not sure what hertz) for gaming.

Here's my monitor: Text

What are your monitors, native and gaming resolutions, and refresh rates? And what should i be using?

Thanks, this'll help me out.

You should always game at native resolution on an LCD if you can manage it. The picture is much worse on an LCD whe not at native res. Best case scenario, everything looks fuzzy and off; worst case scenario, everything is blocky and horribly ugly. CRTs don't really have native resolutions, just "recommended" ones, and can be run just fine at whatever resolution they support and the user wants (though it's best if it's spec'd for at least 72-75Hz at that res).

Refresh rate is not important for an LCD. A low (<72Hz, <85Hz for some people) refresh rate on CRTs can give some people headaches, but since LCDs basically update a picture x times per second instead of flashing it at your eyes x times per second like CRTs, you don't have to worry about it.

So, in summary: for an LCD, pick the max/native res whenever possible; for a CRT, pick whatever res you're comfortable with, and make sure the max refresh at that res is enough for you (sensitivity to refresh rate varies from person to person).

Refresh rates aren't important for LCDs. It's so the graphics card knows there IS a monitor. Don't be concerned with it and just put it at 1280x1024. You'll be fine. A 6600GT can handle that resolution just fine.

i have a benq fp937s, native resolution 1280x1024, i get weird artifacts if i put the refresh rate above 60

i've notice that 1280x960 looks pretty good on it, any other resolution is not that ideal

With LCDs, refresh rate is irrelevant and changing it has no real effect. That is because LCDs simply do not "refresh." Instead they have response time, and it is not really the same thing. LCD pixels are staring pixels - not the result of a scanning electron beam. They turn on and off individually, and that relates to response time. For gaming, one needs 12 ms or less for good motion response.

1280x960@100Hz in most games is nice for 6600 GT. 1600x1200@85Hz for older games. 1920x1440@73Hz is max.

I have a 20" screen with a native res of 1600x1200, with my 9600 256 problem being is that in games the gfx card cant handle the high resolution so i have to change to a lower res, should i buy a new card??

1920x1200 @85 htz

er... 2304x1440 @ 80htz

Or is it 1600x1200?
I guess my FW900 isn't limited to just one resolution... Ah well. I just game in whatever highest resolution I can that still gets good framerates.

so ur saying that I should be running this when I game?...

need a magnifying class to read text with...

i usually run at 1024 x 768

i play Halo a lot and I am under the impression that the game controls the resolution...probably wrong...

i have a 6800 ultra, isn't the response time of the dell 2005 12?

yes, you should buy a new card. a 6800/6800gt on agp is cheap right now, around $300 for a gt, less than $200 for 6800nu and should last you a good time.

Gaming or not, I always use native 1600x1200 60Hz
bf42 and bf2 run just fine.

1GB OCZ PC1066 RIMMs
Asus P4T533-C s478/i850e
TerraTec DMX 6fire LT PCI sound card to Denon AVR-3802 7x110W based HT system
etc

LCD@1920x1200. I always run at a native res. 1920x1200 if supported, and 1600x1200 (not stretched, hence 'native') if 16:10 aspect is not supported.

I have a 710T (sucka, worth every penny)
1280x1024 all the way for everything. id rather play native resolution with less goodies (have a 6600gt which takes care of my game enough - WoW, doom3, farcry and CS1.6 currently)
