Your preference: "disc" or "disk" ?

disc for cds...as it even says compact disc on them

and disk for things like floppies etc...used to be called diskettes? therefore shortened to disk

is it something to do with the fact that a CD, is actually circular shaped, disc shaped, where as things like floppies used a circular medium, but cased in a square housing.

so disc for cd as its circular

disk (diskette for floppy) as its a disc housed inside a rectangular case?

i dunno just a thought

Disc is something you throw. If you had a CD burner ten years ago you can relate. At over $10 PER DISC, it just added fuel to the fire...

Disc refers to 45's as well. Imagine Disko Duck! Sounds European.

As for as my usage is concerned:

disc: optical media, spinal component
disk: magnetic media

And for the record:

disc or (especially North American) disk disk,
noun any flat thin circular body or structure; a quoit thrown by ancient Greek athletes; a circular figure, such as that presented by the sun, moon and planets; the enlarged torus of a flower; the inner part of a capitulum in composite plants; a layer of fibrocartilage between vertebrae, the slipping of which (slipped disc) causes pressure on spinal nerves and hence pain; a gramophone record; (usually as disk) a magnetic disc or a disk file (see entry at disk; computing); a compact disc; a video disc.

Floppies are usually called diskettes. 😛

Typos are a lot softer with the C...

For example, dicc instead of dick. Of course nobody makes misteaks. That's the chef's job. 🙂

Now people call "USB drives" sticks.

"Did you bring your stick with you?"

"I always carry my stick. It's essential equipment."
