They give themselves a lot of wiggle space on their shippin dates. Awesome Laptop! Can't wait. I did order an additional 256MB of RAM from crucial for it, was much, much cheaper than going direct from IBM plus it would have delayed my order even further.

That's correct. I was told 2 weeks on a notebook order with IBM and it came honestly in 2 days all the way from Hong Kong. However an order for a spare battery which was in stock took 2 weeks to get here. I think they really try to ship their notebooks out very quickly.

After taxes, the deal isn't so sweet anymore. I purchased a 2379DJU for $1874 delivered. At the time, IBM was waiting 2 weeks for delivery. So for about the same price, I got my laptop in a few days, rather than waiting 2 1/2 weeks or more.

All in all, my T41 is great. Haven't had any problems, as reported by another poster here.

Janus64 - where did you get yours?

I got mine at shopperwiz.

FYI--- THe T41p comes with a 128mb ATI Fire GL T2 card for those of you crabbing about graphix.... the T41 model however does not.... you have a choice.

I ordered 10 days ago... was told 3 days ago that it would be 30 more days.... then today got notice it shipped :) So it took 10 days from order to ship. Should have it this week, going UPS 2nd day.

I've had a T21 and T23, same series (same footprint). I switched to a Toshiba Satelitte Pro 6100 P4 I got from Costco 9 months ago... at the time it was $800 cheaper than equal IBM. However, I'm going back to more expensive IBM Tx series... I love those things. Will be nice to have a modern model with at least reasonable graphics and USB :)

Got mine the other day. :D

Finally had some time to unpack it & set it up yesterday. It sure is a beautiful laptop, without a doubt the best one I've ever owned.

However after using it for a few hours I started to notice a very subtle but very noticeable 'clicking' noise coming from the front right side.

I opened up the cd-rw/dvd bay door thinking it was accessing or trying to. But it still was there.

The clicking was very erratic & was persistant enough that it started to drive me nuts! :(

For almost 2k I was not happy. This clicking noise would happen even when I was not using the laptop for over 5 minutes, so I know it was not the hard drive being accesed. I'm pretty sure the HD is even on the left side not the right.

Anyway, called IBM. Got an RMA # & they are happily exchanging it for a 'Brand New' one. Only thing is that it'll be @ least 3 weeks before I see it. :(

Oh well, awesome laptop & a great price with excellent service!

PS. I didn't have the SW trouble that was stated earlier in this thread about locking up when using the control panel through "My Computer". Also this deal is still going on~! :D

Can someone please direct me or tell me how to reformat this laptop? I think I want to do a fresh install as well since I also have the control panel problem and I also want to get rid of that 6gb partition. Please tell me how get rid of the partition as well, thanks. I love the laptop, it's great, and since IBM told me it was on backorder for me I just bought it at shopperwiz and saved 10 bucks doing that as well.

When I talked with IBM Tech Support he said that this is 1st complaint that he's had on this.

At first I thought it was because IBM has the "Park Hard Drive" feature incase of a fall. Supposed to determine a drop in a millisecond & park the hard drive. But when the tech said there have been no complaints they are considering it a defect & issuing me a new one.

Anyone else who has this having/hearing a clicking noise?

The T40 was the follow on to the T30. If the T30 did not have a chassis change, then you would have seen a T31. However, IBM went with the Pentium M, making for a thinner, lighter chassis -hance the big model number bump to T40.

So what's the difference in the T40 vs the T41 you ask?? Not much. There was no chassis change so that's why it bumped only to "T41". The real change in the system though is the addition of the motion sensor/accelerometer on the planer of the T41. This sensor feeds data to the Active Hard Drive Protection driver/applet so that it parks the heads of the HD on the fly should the ThinkPad Fall or fly forward off the car seat under heavy braking. (it's also found in the new R50/R50P, and the X40 which should announce in the next couple of weeks.)

They also bumped the top processor from 1.6 in the T40 to a 1.7 Pentium M in the T41 with larger and faster drives available at option.

THe only real thing though that mandated the change from T40 and T41 was that motion sensor. If the planer changes, the model # must change.

The P models of both the T40 and T41 have the ATI Fire GL 128mb card in them. This is not a dinky Nvidia or ATI mobile chipset --- It's an engineering grade chipset and one of the most powerful you'll find in any notebook. IBM has cross certified this combo with various field engineering apps ie; petroleum industry, and it is ceritfied on Catia. What this means is you'll get a higher level of support from IBM and your software vendor if you run into any problems running these specifically certified for use on "this" ThinkPad apps...... They do the same on their Intellistation line.

If you are not going to use you ThinkPad for these apps or gaming, save some dough and buy the plain T40 or T41.

Running a T41P here.... Not a problem. Have 5 peers with either T41 or T41P with no problems either. It wouldn't be the Hard drive protection system anyway.

Don't get rid of the 6gb partition if you ever want to do a factory recovery from the drive. You can call them and get the free recovery cd's as long as it's in warranty.

Set your CD to first boot and fire up Fdisk. You'll be good to go waste that drive.

I've had mine for 10 days...

Tonight I did a reboot to do a IE update... and the system won't start! It says the "ERROR 0200: Failure Fixed Disk 0" and no matter how I cold or warm boot it, won't start!

This is my 5th Thinkpad Txx series in 3 years, and I've never had a failure on one!

I did activate the "Active Hard Drive Protection" and it was working fine under XP, but this may be my first boot after activating it. The DRIVE was working FINE, the shutdown was perfectly normal (shutdown, then I turned on power button to boot again).

I pulled the drive out, ti is a IBM drive. Put it back in, still no luck. Going to call IBM, but really wierd to have a perfectly working hard drive not come up after routine reboot. Not at all like my experience with IBM Txx series in the past.

That sucks indeed...

My first ThinkPad was a 701 "Butterfly".... circa 1996.....

I've had the following TP's in total.... the 701, 755cdv, 380, 600, 600x, 770, T20, T21, T23, A31, T40, and now a T41P.

Oh.. and a powerbook in 98. ;)

The only TP that gave me any real problem was the T20.... There was a subset of the T20's that had drive "problems".... So I lost the drive in that one.

And yeah... I've had a lot of ThinkPads.... Thank god I'm not buying them out of pocket. I'm a presenter for my company so I usually get the latest and greatest.... with the most current one being the T41P.

So if any of you want real opinions on ThinkPads - just ask me... I travel 40 weeks out of the year, and generally push some of these TP's to the limit.--including abuse.

Hi. I just stumbled upon the website for this forum after doing a google search for IBM T41s. Do you know of any good current deals for this particular model? Thanks!

High res screen on the P models.

T41 models and t41p have the hard drive protection system.
