Just read up on KY castle laws. Turns out I can shoot them through the door if they are breaking of forcibly trying to enter.

I think it would take a hell of a lot for me to actually pull the trigger. But considering that I'm kind of a girl and have never shot a gun before (nor do I have any desire to do so) I don't really know. I'm not big on violence but I guess if I really had to I'd really have to.

I'd use my shotgun to turn the no good thieving son of a bitch into pudding, call police to pick up the body and call Stanley Steamer to get out the stains.

I would not have shot him through the door. I would've waited until he actually made his way inside the house or until I could see flesh.

No matter the situation, these never ever end well. Even if a burglar kicks your door down, aims a gun at you, and then you shoot him you better hope his gun was loaded and the jury isn't full of anti-gun nuts.

This country has made it increasingly more difficult to protect itself.

This.

If he made it into the house then he'd get shot.

Some states differ on their use of the law. Simple google search can answer further inquires.

Exactly - this is a state law matter and what's true in one jurisdiction may not be true in another. If you're considering owning a firearm, find out the facts for your state.

Taking a CCW course would also be extremely beneficial. You'll learn quite a bit about local laws and it's the best way to learn how to handle judgement calls with your weapon.

I'd take the same approach as the OP in that thread. Loaded, safety off, ready for action and yell at the guy that I've got a loaded weapon pointed at him.

Most petty crooks are pussies and will flee at the thought of that. You would gain nothing by firing in this situation. You stand a chance of wounding/killing the thief and in most states you'll be charged. And even if you don't hurt him, the simple fact of firing in his direction could net you a trip to court and possible legal action if he gets the right lawyer to support him.

Guns serve two purposes - 1 to deter, and the second to kill if objective one is't met.

You had only be using purpose 2 on another human in very serious circumstances.

Not really. In the last 5-6 years more and more states have adopted castle laws that give you free reign to protect liberty, person and property. You don't even have to say you felt threatened or in danger - just that they were trying to break in or they are in your house or car.

It depends on the state of course but the trend is towards easier to protect yourself, family, property. You're even protected from civil cases as well.

Head shot, empty magazine, check pulse to make sure it's dead, drag it into basement and cut it up to pieces, throw in furnace, wash hands, resume posting on ATOT.

My plan of action for any disturbance is as follows. This is assuming we're in the bedroom and asleep.

1) Wife goes to the closet of the bathroom with the dog.
2) I hit the alarm if it isn't already going.
3) I take a position in the bedroom with a shotgun facing the door behind my bed.
4) If someone makes an attempt to open my door, I still question whether I fire or offer a warning first. I'm not sure what's legal, but I think I know what's right.

That's it. It was more confrontational before I got married, but now my primary concern is not endangering my wife or kids (when/if).

Just read the Castle Doctrine. Looks like in Georgia I'd be within the boundaries of the law.

Fixed.

Let's say you were in this situation. After chambering your shotgun, the intruder does not leave.

What is your next step? Say it again? Say it a third time? Fire away?

How much/little would it take for you to pull the trigger?

chamber, fire IMMEDIATELY!
if he gets knocked out the door, drag him back in.

if the perp has a record, cops will back you up, and overlook that trail of blood into your house. :Q

My guns are already locked and loaded. Chances are I wouldn't have stayed near the door in case HE decided to fire though it (no idea if he is armed while he is outside). Once he was in the house, well, two to the chest and one to the head.

I don't own a gun... if I had enough notice, I'd run to the kitchen and grab a knife. otherwise I think I could barricade myself in the bedroom pretty easily and bang on the wall that I share with my neighbor while calling the cops.

Firing warning shots/not firing at an intruder would just be stupid. You only aim at something you intend to kill and you damn sure only pull the trigger when you don't know where that bullet is going to go.

What are you going to do? Firing a warning shot into your ceiling? See how many pipe/wires/kids hiding under beds you can hit? And firing through the door is almost as bad of an idea. What if it was your neighbor? What if your neighbor was coming up behind him to try to scare him off?

Now I can see why so many people are for gun control. Too many idiots out there with no idea how to safely use them.

To answer the question; we have dogs that love to bark. If someone wasn't scared off by them, they would not enjoy what would happen if they kept coming. If they made it into the house, they would be hit with multiple 12 guage rounds to the chest. No warning shots, no stop or I'll shoot. Just bang bang, "Hello 911? Can you come clean this up please?"
