Your opinion on a shim plz

Hi, what exactly does a shim do? How do you install one, and where? Also, would i need one with an xp1800+ with an alpha pal8045? While we're on the subject, would i get similar results from the hs if i were to use a panaflo l1a instead of the delta 68.1cfm fan? Thanks for any answers u can provide.

the springs on your alpha should prevent it from crushing the chip...

A shim just protects the chip/socket from being "crushed" and evenly distributes the weight.

A shim is generally not needed for air cooling, but is recommended or a must for water cooling. A shim will make little or no difference in temperatures.

The delta provides more cfm than a panaflo (about 20 more to be exact), so expect different results, and higher noise levels

Shims protect your CPU from cracking during installation and transport. I recommend shims to those who don't have much experience installing heatsinks or for those who just want to be extra careful (me with office workstations 😉). You will get much better results with the delta, but it will most likely be too much noise for you to bear. I'd go with a Panaflo H1 80mm or Sunon 40CFM 80mm.

I would say don't go with a shim. They cause more problems than they solve - i.e. an incorrect fitted shim runs the risk of burning the CPU out.

Read any mounting instructions and take your time installing it - also work the mounting clips a couple of times before installing it and you should be fine.
