Hi Group,
I'm now ready to get to get my new lappy, so I'm gonna give my HP 15.5" wide-screen
to my daughter. so I saw some real nice 17" laptops at CompUSA (just looking) and I was pretty impressed with the prices.

So I thought I would come in here and ask you X-Perts :) on your opinion of the current $1100.oo range of 17" laptops, they looked real nice...so are they as good as I think they are
or what?? some came with a nice size HDD, DVD burner and etc.

Thanks for your help!

I have a Dell 9300 17" and I love it. You should understand that at 17" these laptops are not known for there portability. These should be a number of 17" laptops in the affordable range since you dont need high-end graphics support. A Dell 1705 can be gotten stock for in the $1000 +/- range after discounts. You may also want to cruise over to Newegg.com and look at some of the Acer offerings..some at decent prices. Either of these 2 wouldnt be too bad.

I just received my e1705 Dell about an hour ago from Dell Outlet. For a considerable discount I got a top of the line laptop and the 17" is great to look at, decent construction and quick.

Yes, my Toshiba Qosmio 17" screen beast is over 10 pounds! If I do take it on the road, I find it easier to carry with a notebook backpack than with a shoulder bag. BTW, 17" notebook screens look AWESOME!

17-inchers are great - but as MauiBlue states, they are a load. I had one for two years and recently gave it up for a 1.41. Reason - I travel a lot - especially abroad, and the backpack option is out. That is what carries my digital SLR & family of lenses - about 35 lbs. worth. So, the added weight was significant. I gave the 17-in to my son who is not a traveller, and it suits him fine.

Conclusion? It all depends on your purpose and mission. My laptop is mostly a travelling darkroom for processing digital imagery on the road. I am even thinking of further reducing to a 12-in laptop. 5 labs including battery is a good target. :)

If this puppy had a DVD burner, I'd buy it tomorrow!

The P7000 has an internal optical drive, which can also be switched out for a bay battery. It needs a refresh, though-- it would be killer with an ULV dual-core chip.

Sure does! The 7000D looks even better for the road. The duo core processor will probably be the next model. Thanks!

"your opinion on 17" laptops?"

anything with a screen over 14" ain't portable.

i would get a 19" widescreen and a SFF case rather than get a 17" laptop.

Good point... you can upgrade much easier.

Hey Guys,
Ok, I got one this morning at BB. It's a HP and it can be seen right here...

so far so good, however, I really can not believe how much freaking blotware that new laptops come with.

This has so much It's freaking disturbing. I mean its a no-brainer taking it out but WOW! there is a lot. Like I said in the first post I don't plan on using it for any type of serious

gaming as I have a nice desktop for that (btw, enjoying the heck out of GRAW right now)
but this is one nice looking 17" if one was interested in that particular size. I'll be more up on it later so if you have any Q's don't be afraid to ask me.

Btw, my daughter saw it on the kitchen table as I was setting it up and she couldn't believe her eyes as she never saw the new 'Hi-Bright' screens before much less a 17" lappy, hehe, she thought that it was for her LOL, infact shes hovering over right now...

that's my point, i wouldn't consider buying a PC for portable reasons if i wanted a screen bigger than 14"

if i wanted a portable PC it would have a 14" or smaller screen.

otherwise, what i am talking about is really having a small PC that doesn't clutter the desk up too much.

Not everybody has the same needs as yours, though. What if a person wanted or needed a large-screen portable? A 10lb laptop is still easier to carry around then a 15-20lb SFF and a 10lb 19" LCD.

Are the Toshiba P105's any better as far as portability? I see they are listed at only 7.1 pounds, which at least seems lighter than some of these 8, 9 and 10 pound 17 inchers.

I honestly don't understand why people think 17" is not portable. If you can lift 10+ lbs easily and you have a decent carry bag, then it is portable. :)

Ok, I'm back...I just got back from Best Buy (why did I go there????) anyway, I had to take back my original laptop which was the HP Pavilion dv8315nr Media Center Notebook PC

because of some really strange stuff that would go on in the Windows environment which I believe was due to a hardware anamoly with the internal WIFI loop.

Anyway, the laptop I brought back which I liked a lot when I went there is the Toshiba P105 and canbe seen here...

New LAPPY

Ok, the HP was very solid and also a breeze to use and as usual the HP was built very nice, it just was buggy as heck. The Toshiba P105 is very nicw too and it seems to be a little more streamline and also a little lighter as the new 17"ers are not as heavy as the first generation laptops...also, my new Toshiba P105 is a duo centrino (a huge drool factor here)

I'll report back later on how she works out but so far everything is coming along just fine...later all,

BTW, as usual the idiot at BB who I had to deal with made me glad that I don't carry a gun with me :)
