There's a Gigabyte GTX 560Ti for $199 after rebate. If you can skim above $200 then you could pick up a HD 6950 for around $245 after rebates and unlock the shaders to 6970 levels.

560 ti and 6950 are usually ~$200. However with Black Friday and 28nm cards coming soon i would keep my eyes on the hot deals forum and see what materializes.

Everyone talks about the 28nm cards coming soon, but production will not be in full swing for quite a while yet. Months actually. If anything is available within the next 3 months it might not have immediate impact on pricing because of low supply.

Have to see, but I would not put all my eggs into that basket.

Get a Radeon 6850 or 6870. They've got one of the best price/performance ratios out there, and I have a 6850 in my pc that gives a solid 60 FPS for just about anything I throw at it.

GTX 470.

That's all predicated on "if" you have a power supply and CPU worth hooking it up to. Not to mention monitor resolution (which you didn't say on any of those points so I'll just take it as a rhetorical question).
good grief NO. he can get a much quieter, less power hungry and cooler running gtx560 ti with a new game for that price.

but yes the OP needs to list ALL his current pc specs...

Can't hurt to see what happens. You can check most adds online (there's sites that post the ads up prior to the actual release), but doesn't usually include Amazon or newegg etc.

Well, without an overclock on that CPU you'd really be lacking CPU more than GPU power.

yep this is why you need to always list this stuff when you start a thread. there is no point in getting faster gpu than what you already have. even your 5770 is being held back in cpu intensive games.

well I can tell you that 4gb is barely going to cut it in some games unless you close every thing down before starting a game. I am close to 4gb of actual ram being used many times during the day just on the desktop. next you will have to get a new power supply with any decent card. and finally that case has very poor airflow so your temps will be much higher than in a normal case.

I wasn't just talking about potentially getting a 28nm card. In fact, I was thinking more like the recent $183 AR gtx 480 deal at newegg.

Yes, another 2 gigs of RAM is required along with another power supply.

The PC is $400. Ram and PS should be around $100 and $200 for a card and I have a decent gaming rig (according to some benchmarks someone ran for me a MUCH better unit than what I currently have)

will be fine with 4gigs of Ram for awhile. GPU and PSU. The Ram will not be an issue really. He can hold off on it until he is ready. Its not gonna be a drastic change. If you dont believe me, benchmark your games on 4gigs vs your current ram. The extra ram isnt a bad thing and will help, but i wouldnt prioritize it like you have. Considering fps gains, with 4gb its nowhere near as important as a GPU. But he needs a new PSU for that GPU.

The best GPUs under $200, readily available, are HD6870 and GTX560. If you look around for deals/rebates, you might be able to move up to an HD6950 1GB or a GTX560 Ti.

Really? I have 4GB of physical DDR3 and the machine never seems to use much more than 1.5GB, it doesn't bottleneck performance at all. But that in mind I rarely have much going on in the background when I'm playing games.

^This. 4GB is just fine really, it works for me. But you won't be able to run a performance graphics card off of that OEM 300W PSU.

then you do not do much at all with your desktop. during the day, I am hardly ever below 3gb of ram being used and easily go over 4gb at times. I do not want to close down several things just to play a game for a 30 minutes or so.

with ram prices like they are its silly not to go ahead and have 8gb for a gaming pc. heck even Crysis 2 recommends having 8gb of ram with the DX11 patch. even without gaming, your entire pc will be much snappier since you will now have more ram available to be used for caching.
