Did you google the part of the story you missed first? Or did 4 stand on its own well enough?

I'd say it stood on its own for the most part. I played the other games and finished them, just not 3 (or whatever came before 4). There was a few things that I wasn't quite sure on, but I think the gameplay and overall story made up for it.

I did not google anything about the previous game. You can download some sort of MGS Encyclopedia off of PSN for free if you really need to know about certain things.

I probably want to grab a fighting game.

Super Street Fighter 4. I really don't think anything is close in that genre honestly.

Also God of War III even with its relative ease of "button mashing" seems like fun as a button mashing action game.

Absolutely, I don't use the term button masher as a bash, some of my all time favorite games are button mashers :)

Demon's Souls is more of a hack & slash RPG then traditional console titles- the mechanics are far more complex then normal for that type of game, but the mechanics are there. I absolutely love the game, just don't want you to go in expecting Dragon Quest and end up far closer to Diablo.

You mentioned you grabbed FF7-9, have you considered FF13? It's a bit more linear then is the norm for FF games, but it is obviously along the lines of games you are interested in.

Valkyria Chronicles is another very good game, but it is kind of a hybrid RTS/RPG type offering and not a straight RPG. I enjoyed the title, but it took me quite a while to get into it because it was completely different then what I was expecting.
