Monitor on my comp is from 1994-it will get too hot if left on for more than ~1.5 hour, so I always turn this one of when done.

Other one is just left on, sleep after 2 hours or something..

My monitor turns itself off after 15 minutes.

My screensaver is "blank" and set at 15 minutes as well so a password is required to use the computer.

Since I leave my system on all the time this keeps service people and the cleaning lady from just jumping on and screwing with my computer.

A lot of the time when I leave and intend to be gone for a minute I end up being gone for an hour. So having the monitor sleep is necessary for me, and I figure, why not have it go to sleep within minutes, instead of after a half hour. It doesn't take long to wake it up.

But let it sleep or turn it off overnight, or when I'm leaving the house for a long period of time? Can't decide.

After about fifteen minutes of non-usage I turn the monitor off, otherwise it stays on the normal desktop.

Monitor is on 24/7/365 (unless there is a power outage :) ).

I just keep it on the Desktop while I am awake, and use the Blank ScreenSaver while I sleep.

Monitor is a 19" Dell D1226H from 1998.

I have mine set to go into standby/sleep after 2 hours. Nothing else happens between "done useing" and "windows puts monitor into sleep"

What about sleep vs. turned off for long periods of time as far as the monitor's concerned? Would one or the other be better for the monitor after years of doing it?

Not quite sure, obviously much less than normal, I'd assume.

But is one or the other better for the monitor over time?

long term - turn it off, unless I shut my computer off, at which point the monitor will automatically go into standby.

short term - nothing. I stopped using screensavers and monitor power options when I stopped using crt's.

Monitor goes standby if it is not active for thirty minutes. Turn off when going out, sleeping or shutting computer down.

When I go to bathroom or watching tv/movies, I leave it on. Usually the same habit I've been for long time.

Well, I just got a new LCD, I let it go to sleep after 10 minutes, just trying to decide whether to turn it off or just let it sleep overnight/when I leave the house.

If I will be more than 15 feet away and don't plan on walking right back...off they go.

Turn it off if you won't be using it for a while. Even standby sucks some energy, and you seriously can't wait 5 more seconds for it to fire up?

LCDTV so I turn it off if it's going to be longer than 10 minutes.

giant crt sucks up a lot of power so I turn it off long-term. Too lazy for the monitor to take like 20 s to power off so I sleep it.
