They sure can unless maybe you have access to a newserver that sends everything encrypted.

Nope, they can or do monitor everything you download ftp, http, smtp, etc

I don't know this for a fact, but yes they can. And, I don't think they care even a little bit what you are getting from Newsgroups or what you read there. I went to this one newsgroup on the Verizon News server which was about people requesting Verizon to add newsgroups. Like some people would say "I can't see alt.binaries.tables.pictures.cars.html, could you add it please". I have seen some of the WORST requests in there, and Verizon just adds that group to their server, without even a hitch.
