your greatest stock call and how much was the profit?

Dear Summer

Golden Member
I've been analyzing some graphs and it's amazing how if you get in at the right time and rode the wave, you would've profited greatly.

Just curious to hear about some of your good past experiences

My greatest call was buying AAPL at 13 7/8 in 1997, before Jobs returned. It was my first stock purchase, and I didn't make all that much before I sold it, but it funded the beginning of a modest career in daytrading.

I bought JAVA after the large crash last year.
I sold it a few days later on the rebound.

I made about $200 and it taught me to stay the hell away from individual stocks.

Too risky for my taste. 🙂

A small, at the time, biotech company called ID Biomedical. I bought in at $7.00ish in '98 and the company was purchased by Glaxo in '05 for $35/share. Unfortunately I only had a relatively small number of shares, but still, it was a pretty damn good payout and not one I can see myself replicating anytime soon.

I find it hard to believe that you purchased that stock at its LOWEST possible point of 2009.. how did you do that?

I've witnessed some incredible days for some people that would put that to shame, but those are still some good trades!

What time did you get in and out? Looks like it was trending pretty heavily upwards throughout the day and if you got in and out on the open/close you would have made your $3 which is pretty decent given that it traded in a $4.74 range that day.

That was the morning that FRE announced it needed to raise billions of dollars in capital to cover bad bets, make new loans and set aside for future writedowns. It opened down 50% and kept falling. It dropped to about the mid $3s and I was too scared to touch it. Ive been burned by financials in trouble before, notably Etrade when it blew up (went from $12 to $2.95 and I lost big by buying premarket at $6 using triple margin!) From then on, I wait for open and let things play out for awhile when it comes to financials.

I decided to buy FRE when I noticed it was stabiliizing and rising. I was intending to sell around the mid $5s but it kept going up and up and up. Then there was a rumor that the government was going to LOAN them billions to stay afloat, the stock ran to the mid $7s on that news. Now sitting on about $50,000 total profit I hesitated and sold for a little less. Before the day was over, FRE hit almost $8.50, which would have meant a $60,000 profit. But Ive lost money by being greedy and my palms were too sweaty by that point anyway. I called my dad and asked, "Should I sell?

I bot Guidant options for 5c after BSX made a bid for them. a few days later BSX upped their bid and the options went to $2.50. Profit was ~$50k with a $1k investment.

My greatest was also my worst and taught me a valuable lesson as well. I bought Novell at $7 a share, held it and watched as it climbed all the way to $43 something a share at which time I put in a sell order for when it hit $45. It never hit $45 and about a week later came the beginnings of the tech crash. Instead of being smart and selling it at $39 a share I waited. I still want to kick myself in the ass when I think about it.

Ah, so you got in on the low then. Nice work because it didn't stay below $4 for very long. I only have numerical data available so I couldn't cross reference any headlines but it sounds familiar.

I don't actually trade, I just write software for people that do trade so I've never had to make those kinds of decisions in real time... maybe someday.

My worst year ever was 2007. I had about $11,000 to trade with (of which $8,000 was borrowed money). I made killing shorting subprime. I had 2500 share short of NEW CENTURY FINANCIAL the weekend it announced it was being forced into bankruptcy. Traded the reits long and short, making $9,000 one day, and losing $5,000 the next (all on my PDA phone @ work)

I turned that $11,000 into $60,000! Then came ACCREDITED HOME LENDERS, I lost $33,000 on that one trade alone when Lonestar backed out of the deal to buy them out. Then came DENDREON and I got DENDREOND! Another huge loss. That was before I started protecting big bets with options, which I started in late 2007.

When 2007 was over, I had just enough money to payoff the loan and that was it.

Sounds like a typical trader if you ask me 😛

All is fine until you blow up, luckily most people are smart enough to change their strategies once they realize how stupid they were being.. unfortunately some don't

How long have you been day trading? How many hours per day/week do you put in?
