warning went out 3 month ago, and they ignored it..

no these guys built an gambling interface where you can log in from anywhere and place bets and our sql server will process and log all the stuff. They were betting on everything, presidency, armstrong races, etc..

you're basically stealing bandwidth, storage space, processing power... stealing is stealing..

we did at our work too. We setup an Unreal Tournament server and had 3 people playing it. We got a warning and stopped.

I actually have no problem with gaming.. if you use it for a few hours a day (ie after hour break), thats fine.. if you use it 24/7 and have people logging in, dont you think thats a bit different ?

Were they doing work ? Was the stuff that they were doing disturbing others. You're right, if you use it 24/7 and people are logging in, its different because you probably have network traffic that can be detected.

Actually I love my users that think they are "one up'ing" me.

Like the guy that got hold of an invoice for HP 15k 146GB SCSI U320 drives at about $900 a pop and wrote up a big paper on how he can buy WD 300GB drives for $100 after rebates...even added that 15k drives are too loud for our workstations and SCSI is not as good as SATA for them.

It was a funny weekly meeting.

EDIT: another person dropped by while i was typing..

we're a financial company.. sql server is like a gold mine.. we need every bit of processing power. Our quant team will model up stocks/bonds from 5-10 years ago and need all the processing power available... Its not like we have a few dual xeons working on this, we got 6 poweredge 6650 quad xeons for backend and dual xeons for front end. To steal processing power is a huge crime..

not to mention that half these guys download hacks cracks and loaded up their pc with virus.

So when you use words like "bet" or "betting" , sounds like gambling to me...

TradeSports.com is a person-to-person trading "Exchange". It allows you to trade in the most innovative, transparent and exciting way on financial, sporting, current events, entertainment and many similar events. TradeSports members trade directly with each other, bypassing the middle-man.

When you trade on TradeSports you are pitting your wits against other members of TradeSports. TradeSports provides the platform whereby members can trade between themselves without paying a Sportsbook margin or vig. The winning member will receive the profits, the losing member pays the loss.

With no vig, no juice, no artificial spread, TradeSports charges a small transaction charge per lot traded.

--

First you should decide if you prefer our Trading Screen or our Betting Screen. These offer the same contracts and prices but display the information in different formats. Traders may find the Trading Screen more intuitive, while customers of Sports Books may be more at home with the Betting Screen.

I take what I said back. gg. wow i can't believe they created their own trade sport...

ROFL...granted you can get deals by shopping on the net vs buying from places like CDW, you won't get the service nor credit CDW offers. I used to be one of those punks who always laughed at IT for "overpaying" for Computer equipment.

It's more than that. I will buy from anyone that will take a W9 for a fortune 500 or if I can fit it on my CC and get reimbursed.

a 15K U320 SCSI drive is a whole other animal than a WD 7.2K 300GB (I own one).....

When you are serving more users than you can count on your fingers and toes and multiply by your fingers and toes, a 15k U320 is a nice thing to have :)

heh i hated it when people would think we are over paying or doing something dumb. 95 (hmm percent key not working heh) it was a kid fresh out of college. We would usually try to talk to the kid until he got disruptive ( usually trying to gain brownie points with higher management) then embarrass the kid in a meeting or something.

meh, they should've work in IT so they can get away with that kind of stuff....

we have a World of Warcraft (server emulator) running at work.... but of course we only play after hours. er, no mp3 or dvds....ahem

we just caught another person with gigs of porn on the company data server... my manger had to send notice to this guy's manager. this guy is a regional director too.. so it wasn't like the contractor that got fire the next day from my previous thread.

You're worried about these people using processor power?

If they're truly setting up a betting system on your server, I'd be far more worried about the legal ramifications of having an illegal activity taking place on company servers.
