Recently got an android phone and i'm really liking it. I'm really curious as to what are your favourite apps that you can't live without?
 
f-droid repository libre programs
Termux terminal emulator with packages
Ghost Commander file manager
Vanilla music player
 
I travel a lot to other countries and Google Map is very valuable to me, especially I can download the whole city and use it off line when I don't have internet connection.

Google Translate is helpful too. Not great but will do if you are in a bind.
 
Besides the phone and sms messaging apps that are integrated in the device/Android, Plex might be the most oft-used.

Or Bejeweled. (I kid)
 
I would say Tapatalk, but I haven't figured out how to block your posts using it yet. 😉

For the call blocking app...that sounds great. I really just want to find a way to block all calls that aren't in my contact list and only send those in my contact list to voicemail if I don't answer. I'm tired of spam phone calls leaving me spam voicemails that I have to delete. I did a few timeshare deals before the pandemic and some of them have been pinging me hard this past year.

My Android phone (not sure of yours) has a great feature called Do Not disturb. While I obviously use it with a set-time range of something like 10:00 - 6:00 AM - it can be pretty well configured.

Basically, unless I put a star next to someone on my contact list for important folks (wife, mom, family, good friends, etc...) then it entirely silences the phone call and doesn't ring/vibrate - regardless of the number.

It works great. You build up a database of unwanted numbers.

It has cut down on the number of annoying calls I get. No more telemarketers, debt collectors and scams. I was getting way too many of those calls. Now I get maybe 5 a month.
 
My Android device will tell me if it suspects a spam call. Not sure this is a standard feature but stock Android has it.
 
It seems almost every app is out to get your data or spy on you these days so I try to avoid apps as much as I can but if I need something I will look at reviews first to see what is best app for that purpose. I still have no easy way of knowing what it might be doing in the background though. I hate the phone ecosystem in general really, it's just too closed and you don't have enough control as a user.

The next phone I buy I want to make sure it can take a custom rom though, they are still Android based so still using google code but I assume they should be better than stock. Some of them they even strip all the google stuff out.

I agree. I am pretty selective on apps that I install, but typically only install apps for companies I do business with. I don't install a lot of games or stupid things I don't need.

Not much in the way of "story" but easy to jump in/out of when you need to kill 15 minutes and decently fun in a Diablo hack & slash kinda way.
