So I am sitting here listening to Chris Cornell, and it got to me wondering who's everyones favorite vocalist? Male or female, it doesn't matter. And do remember, everyone has their own taste. No one's favorite is better than anyone else.

For me I think Chris Cornell would have to be in my top 3, if not number 1. How about you guys???

Favorite? Man, that's a tough one.

Lately I've kind of been into Tori Amos, her voice is just incredible. Amazing Nirvana cover she's been performing for many years.

Freddie Mercury is up there as is Paul McCartney and John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, Bono...I think you have to put Michael Jackson on that list too. I like Chris Cornell a lot, he's got a unique voice, I heard him do a cover of a Michael Jackson song on the Howard Stern show a few years ago that was just amazing.

I can't even narrow it down to one of each gender. Here are five of each, in no particular order. (Chris Cornell would be in my top 10 for males.)

Heather Nova
Tori Amos
Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde)
Tanita Tikaram
Aimee Mann

Elvis Costello
Richard Thompson
Bryan Ferry
Peter Gabriel
Grant-Lee Phillips (Grant Lee Buffalo)

I gotta go with Geddy Lee. Oh, you're not talking about vocalist where you can't tell if its man or woman singing?

Billy Corgan is good, too.

Female I'd have to say Aguilera got the best pipes out there that I've heard. Katy Perry is probably the best of the newest crop.

Lately I've been digging the chick from Karmin Music (you may or may not have seen her really awesome cover of that really shitty Chris Brown song "Look At Me Now"). I'm also a fan of Skylar Grey/Holly Brook (a.k.a. the woman who wrote "Love the Way You Lie" and performed in "I Need A Doctor"). You might remember her from the short-lived days of Fort Minor when she sang in "Where'd You Go?".

At the moment, Greg Brown and Sharon Jones.

Good to see Richard Thompson, and of course, Tom Waits, being mentioned, but not many people know Greg Brown, and I LOVE him!

Like Waits and Thompson, he mostly writes his own songs.

Blue Car is a personal favorite, but Fishing With Bill may be the one I love the best.

I'm a fan of his buddy Bill Morrissey as well, and together have seen him or Brown play live at least ten times or more.

Given the rather pedestrian tastes of the OP, this thread is turning out OK.

Victoria Legrand (Beach House)
Anna Calvi
Zola Jesus
Beth Gibbons (Portishead)
Lykke Li
Annie Clarke (St. Vincent)
Rebekkah Raa (Stricken City)

Not a fan of many male vocalists, but Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip) and Kasper Bjorke come to mind.
