Upgrades I did this year
athlon 64 3200 - Athlon 64 FX 57
1 gb ram - 2 gb ram
6800 GT - 7800 GT (by xmas)

My favorite was probably the ram, BF2 runs as smooth as a babys butt...lol.

2GB of memory.

My 3700+ is okay, but I miss having 2 processors. My 6800GT is okay, but I have to put the settings down in BF2 for it to be smooth all of the time.

In order highest to lowest: Samsung 213T, AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+, 2GB RAM, and then the other stuff that had to be updated to support those components.

Going from
Pentium 3 550 Mhz
384 MB ram
GeForce 2 MX 400 64 MB
13 GB IDE HD

To

AMD Athlong 64 3500+ @ 2.6 Ghz
1Gb of Ram
7800GTX @ 499/1330
SeaGate 7200.7 160GB HD

X800 XL, passively cooled. The difference in lack of noise is amazing and it's one of the best cards I've ever owned, period.

The new speakers

OMFG! YOU SPENT $2000 ON SPEAKERS?!??!?!

Let me rephrase that:
OMFG! YOU SPENT $2000 ON SPEAKERS!?!?! ARE YOU NUTS?
I am thinking about selling my old Logitech Z640 to a friend and just use some creative speakers with a headphone output, since I only listen to my headphones. Hmm... do you know of any nice headphones?

I think my best upgrade this year would have to be my NEC 3540! And a couple of hard drives. 😀

I like my Sennheiser HD-570 headphones. They don't require an amp to run; they can be used directly with a portable music player or from a computer sound card. Very comfy and the best sound system I own. Try ebay for a good deal; I got mine for about $80 nib.

No, he's not nuts. You just haven't heard $2,000 speakers yet 🙂 I used to have a set of Logitech z-640 speakers, which I thought was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Then I built a pair of Dayton speakers and got an integrated amp. Holy awesome sound Batman. Just be careful about what you let yourself listen to, because if you hear a really awesome set of speakers and then go home to listen to your $50 set, you'll cry. Trust me, I know from experience 😀

Agreed...I used to have a pair of ESS AMT-1B monitors that were bi-amplified with 4 mono tube amps. I cry when I remember how the LA earthquake took them away from me...sigh.

BTW, they were $6k all up...
