Chocolate, Dates, Berries (and other fruits close behind)

If we are talking dishes/prepared foods, pizza.
Ewwww dates? Dates really? They taste like crap.
Ewwww why do people like raisin bread and why oh why is there dried raisins in museli? I love museli but I can't stand the raisin I always pick them out and by the time I picked them out im late for work.

I loooove Thai curries and make home versions using Maesri's pre-made pastes. Yes, it's cheating, but grinding everything in a mortar and pestle is a pain even *if* you can get the ingredients. Punjabi and some Gujarati things, too, though I only know how to make a few of them, mostly simple ones like matar paneer and a few different kinds of dhal.

And Italian food is my absolute favorite; I've gotten good at making several tomato-based sauces and have figured out how to sauce pasta properly (cook to just short of al dente, retain 1/4c of the water when you drain, add into sauce, stir in with water and a little more oil, finish in sauce).

All this is mostly because it's fun and (the way I do it) healthy and cheaper than processed foods, but also because I want to be able to make good, healthy, delicious food for my girlfriend when we move in together <3

I love the Medjool dates you can get here in the US. They taste like caramel.

Yup, they are like natural candy with a meaty texture. I like Deglet Noor dates, as well, though the average supermarket dates are just okay.

Dates from California (and parts of the Southwest) are pretty good but the various Middle Eastern date varieties are amazing.

California Medjools have a pretty light caramel taste, if you want something really buttery-caramel try Khalas dates.
Unfortunately where I live I'm lucky to have more than just apples and oranges at the store. I'll check some of the specialty stores though, thanks.

Common misconception.

Fresh dates are one of the best things you will ever eat. However, it is hard to find fresh dates locally; most people have never had a truly fresh date. I get them from local Middle Eastern places sometimes, but mostly I order them online. Semi-dried dates are okay, but are not the same as a fresh date, and most of the boxes you find in stores (Sam's, TJ's, etc.) aren't really "fresh". Dried dates are awful. Those little chunks you find in trail mix are just the worst. A fresh date is gooey & tastes awesome. Like PottedMeat said, a good Medjool can taste like caramel. hmu around November this year (harvest time!) & I'll send you a box of fresh ones off the farm.

Oh I see. Are you serious about sending me some dates? Currently I'm living in the UK. Can you ship overseas lol? I really really appreciate it :)

In the UK all dates are packed in an artificial bag and even if they are fresh they taste like dirt. However, I am very eager to try your freshly picked medjool ^_^

US here, but I'm sure we can figure something out :D I get most of my dates from a small farm in California. They pick them & ship them straight to you. Minimum order is 15 pounds, so I usually get a couple huge boxes. They do freeze well.

A lot of the dates you get the store are still kind of mushy, but not truly fresh. They are decent, but not as good. A fresh date is different from a semi-dried date is different from a dried date. Personally I think dried dates are nasty. Just the worst. Nothing at all like a raisin. Semi-dried are okay if you're in a pinch, but nothing beats a fresh date. A frozen fresh date that is thawed is still pretty good though. If you have any Muslim shops in the area, check them out around Ramadan time, they usually get boxes of them from the Middle East & they are reasonably decent. I actually like the ones from California better than the ones I've gotten from Israel & other countries, however.

No no, I'm saying minimum from the farm, not me lol. I order a bunch & freeze for the year. I'm sure I can ship a small package to the UK & still retain freshness haha.
