The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Most people are not familiar with his work, but he is one of the greatest writers of satire in history. Check out his work if you can!

That Hideous Strength, by C.S. Lewis. Aquaman, if you like the Tolkien books you should read C.S. Lewis' Trilogy. Out of the Silent Planet, Peralandra, and the aforementioned. He wrote them with references to the (yet unpublished) books by Tolkien. They intertwine.

The Stand, It and the Dark Tower series by Stephen King.
The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Swan Song by Robert R. McCammon.
Weaveworld by Clive Barker.
Farenhiet 451 by Ray Bradbury.
2001, 2010, 2063, 3001 and the Rama series by Arthur C. Clarke.

I am reading The Culture of Fear: Why Americans Are Afraid of the Wrong Things by Barry Glassner right now and it is pretty good.

I like Stephen King's Dark Tower series, but Clive Barker's Imagica still leaves a lasting image in my mind. Clancy's Executive Orders was good too. I guess I don't have a favorite. Maybe Golding's Lord of the Flies...

i also think all the drizzt books are great (salvatore)

hmm, that's because you haven't read A song of Ice and Fire series. It easily beats both LotR and WoT....

but I think you need to read WoT before you can truly appreciate Martin's style.
