Your favorite adventure game series??

Kabob

Lifer
What's your favorite series?

There's a few FPS/TPS' in there but they all have a solid storyline.

If there's a popular one I've left off let me know and I'll add it.

I was hesitating between Fallout and PoP. Since I liked the new PoP a lot more than Fallout 3 (which I liked anyway 😛), I chose PoP !

I can tell you which ones wouldn't be on my list at all and they would be GTA and Halo. Otherwise top 5 in no particular order have to be zelda, castlevania, ff, RE, megaman

I have some serious qualms with how you define "adventure", as it seems to include pure shooters and RPGs.

I second the motion on Halo. I just hate that series.

On the other hand I have a really hard time choosing between Zelda, and Castlevania, but if I had to choose one it would have to be Zelda since I was playing that since the nes days. Didn't start playing Castlevania till Symphony of the night on PS and the GBA games.

That I do...how should I word it or what should I remove?

Games that have mostly linear paths through areas aren't adventure games, almost by definition. Given that, I'd narrow down the list as follows:
Castlevania (DS)
Chrono Cross/Trigger
Elder Scrolls
Fallout
Final Fantasy
Grand Theft Auto
Legacy of Kain
Legend of Zelda
Metal Gear
Metroid
Ninja Gaiden
Resident Evil

Some of those are debatable - RE, MG, and NG are marginal at best. I've never played Legacy of Kain, so I left it, but it very well may not belong. Final Fantasy is interesting - I would argue that it's not an adventure game because most of them are fairly linear (just with side quests) and exploration doesn't play much of a role. In fact, if you narrowed it down to games where exploring a large, complex environment is a major part of gameplay:
Castlevania (DS)
Elder Scrolls
Fallout
Grand Theft Auto
(Legacy of Kain (maybe? never played them))
Legend of Zelda
Metroid

Just my opinion, of course.

how convenient for the poll to default with castlevania. Saved me a lot of hard work trying to decide if i even liked any of the other games.

I don't see Elder Scrolls (or FF for that matter) as an adventure game at all. It is a RPG...

I guess it depends on your perspective, all games present some type of 'adventure' but may or may not fall into the adventure genre. Being linear or not has nothing to do with it.

"An adventure game is a type of video game characterized by investigation, exploration, puzzle-solving, interaction with game characters, and a focus on narrative rather than reflex-based challenges."

Some notable games that DO fall into the adventure genre that you left out are Tomb Raider and Uncharted

edit: my favorite series out of that list would have to be Final Fantasy, but since it is not an adventure game series, how can I vote?

Of the narrowed down list, Legend of Zelda hands down. Though Phantom Hourglass was a bit disappointing. But if we're listing adventure game series, where the heck are Monkey Island and Sam & Max? I blame T.H.E.M. for this travesty. lol

Sam and Max are on Wii now so this does fit in with console games.

Does 2 games constitute a series?

Also, aren't the only adventure series in that list Zelda, Princo of Persia, Metroid, and Legacy of Kain?

Out of those 4, I can't really pick a favorite, as they all have had their ups and downs.

True dat. I was expecting some Monkey Island love.

Second for some Monkey Island love with a sprinkling of Grim Fandango!

Since you listed some RPG's up there as well I would like to make my own personal nomination for the list. The Suikoden Series. It's been my fav rpg series for a long time now.

Yeah, those types of games are what I always considered the "adventure" genre. Grim Fandango was my all-time favorite. I also liked Full Throttle.

Can't really call either of those a "series" as both only had one game.

Monkey Island on the other hand was fantastique (Murry, the invincible demonic skull!!)

Yeah, maybe I have a weird idea of what an adventure game is...but it's OK to be weird, right? 😛

I don't know why point & click games got the "adventure" genre title, I'd say all the series in the poll involve somebody having an adventure. Not sure what to call the broad group you were going for.

Whatever you want to call it, I voted Zelda.

most of those games are RPGs or even FPS' - not really adventure games...

but anyway, based on your pole, i'm going with Prince of Persia, those games never dissapoint. after that i'll give it up to Zelda, ocarina of time ftw
