Actually, I just realised that Baldurs Gate 2 was released in 2000. So I'll change that to Civlization 2.

Combat Flight Simulator
Descent
Descent 2
Descent 3
Half-Life
Marathon
Marathon 2
Marathon Infinity.
Quake & Expansions
Quake 2 & Expansions
Quake 3
Starcraft & Broodwar
TIE Fighter
Unreal
Unreal Tournament
Warcraft 2
X-Wing

Oh yeah, I suppose Half-Life was released in the 90s, and enjoyed a fair bit of Counter-Strike too.

On a different note - I realize this is a PC games list, but I have to mention Goldeneye for the N64.

(how come LucasArts hasn't redone this, can you imagine the sales on this? This was the best damn game ever... I think I spent half a year creating custom missions... )
They already have X-Wing Alliance. Its 3D accelerated and has a pretty darn good skirmish mode. You can set up huge battles between multiple capital ships and a buttload of fighter wings.

I remember I played the hell out of lemmings, simcity, MW2, Wasteland, AOE2, Starcontrol 2, Unreal Tournament 99, Warcraft 2, and many console and pc games in between.

In no particular order...

Quake (TF), Quake 2, Doom, FF7, Ultima Online, Diablo, Total Annihilation, Duke 3D, Half-Life

Final Fantasy VII, Diablo, Shogo M.A.D., Total Annihilation, Warcraft II, Shadow Warrior

Probably out of all those, I'd have to say Final Fantasy VII and Total Annihilation are my favorites and have stood the test of time. I still play each of them on occasion.

Street Fighter 2 (it was on the PC also!)
Total Annihilation
UT1
Diablo
Warcraft2
C&C series
Baldur's Gate
Planescape (?)
HalfLife (Although I didn't play it until way into 2000)
7th Guest
Wolf3D
Doom series
Battlezone
Gold Box D&D games
SimCity Series
Ultima Series

These wasted a TON of hours of my life! 🙂

Alone in the Dark
Darkseed
Ultima VII
Flashback
Tombraider (with 3dfx Glide)

and about 10,000 others.

OH! And WORMS! 🙂

Rogue Spear

First game ever that addicted me. I kicked ass with the Enfield L85 3 shot burst.... generally no one used that weapon either. I'd routinely get 3-4 kills a round. I was a prodigy!!!

Nobody has mentioned Worms yet...

Except you.

Worms was fun, but it wasn't top 5 material IMO. I still consider worms 2 to be the pinnacle of the series - everything they tried after just didn't really work right - especially that godawful worms 3d.

Doom 2
Marathon 2
Masters of Orion 2
Starcraft
Warcraft 2
Yoda Stories (though I bet if I went back to it now I wouldn't like it as much)
Half-Life 1
SimAnt

whoops, thats more than 5.

DOOM!

We had the original LAN parties in my workshop. 6 of us would meet up once a month starting Friday after work , spend HOURS painfully getting our network going.... many beers and pizzas and 48 hours later your face would hurt from laughing so hard..

We did some Falcon, MiG29, descent, quake2... a few others, but nothing compared to the doom fests

"The Racing Game for the Chemically Imbalanced" 😀 LOL - Oh yeeaaa I remember.

Even the box art is classic - Pic of Box Art

When you mention that you have played Carmageddon, Red Neck Rampage and the Postal series, people seem to slowly walk backwards away from you.

1) Unreal

I have a spot very very close to my heart for the original Unreal. It's one of the few games that I could accurately describe as "magical" to experience

wow I though I would have been the only one to say something like that but yea laying eye's for the first time on Unreal with a brand new TNT card was indeed a magical moment to experience at the time. I think it took me a whole day to do the first level so much that I was in awe of it all.

Also Half Life, Doom and Return to Castle Wolfenstein are given, but here are my honorable mentions that I had the pleasure of playing in the 90's.

13) Balls of Steel

12) Silent Hunter

11) Viper Racing

10) Star Trek Elite Force II

9) The Original Postal
(you won't know until you play it)

8) Serious Sam

7) James Bond 007 Nightfire which is still available to play on XP
(Good story, very well produced, amazing game for it's time)

6) X Beyond the Frontier

5) The Original Soldier of Forture

4) Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger - Best of the series.
John Rhys-Davies, Mark Hamill, Tom Wilson aka Biff Tannen and Ginger Lynn Allen what more do you want 🙂

3) Alien vs Predator 2
(it had bugs but it makes FEAR look like sitcom, this thing gave me nightmares at the time)

2) My all time favorite game from the 90's (apart from the FPS's)
- Jane's Longbow Gold -
Future Apache simulators were not able to catch the magic of this game.

1) HL, Doom, RTCW - tie

4) Unreal Tournament '99
The best multiplayer shooter of the 90s. What more is there to say?

1) Unreal
I have a spot very very close to my heart for the original Unreal. It's one of the few games that I could accurately describe as "magical" to experience (the only others probably being Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Half-Life 2). A large portion of this ranking is rosy-colored-glasses, but I really don't give a damn. I'm ok with nostalgia tilting the rating. Another thing I'd like to note is that Unreal was properly long - there was a lot of meat there, unlike today's 8-10 hour shooters. Epic earned themselves an almost unlimited amount of goodwill & trust from this title, which has been helpful lately in overlooking UT3. Winner.

i came in here to post those 2,

UT99 IMO is still one of the best multypayer shooters, none of the UTs after it were as good IMO

also agree with starcraft

ill add Diablo to that and MOO 2

Warcraft II (Cases ladder TomcaT 🙂
StarCraft
Civ2
Duke Nukem 3D
Blood
(I would have added Half Life, but I didnt play it until a few years ago)
