PC has no generations so to speak, but for the sake of this discussion I'd peg "last gen" is 2005 - 2013.

Bioshock Infinite
Mass Effect Trilogy
Skyrim

That is a big gen.

In that timeline have I liked the Tomb Raider remake, Sonic Generations, and Gears of War. Oh and Portal 2.

It was an unusually long console generation. 7 years between new hardware releases. Which I believe is the longest gap in video game history. Five years is the average.

I suspect there's a couple reasons behind that. Games are taking longer to produce for one. There was also the economic meltdown in 2008 followed by a long period of near stagnant economic growth.

Half Life (hey, until half life 3 comes out, and until they stop releasing new games on the source engine, I would argue that Half Life 2 is current gen)

If you include consoles, Red Dead Redemption (which I've recently resumed playing solely to play the surprisingly good Hold 'Em minigame). If we're talking specifically PC, Skyrim. Portal 2 was outstanding as well, but I spent way longer in Skyrim, between mods and the sheer variety of gameplay on offer. Actually, I've spent more time in Counter-Strike Source than all other videogames combined times 10 during that time period, but CS Source doesn't feel like a last-gen game so much as an older game that's been ported to a shinier engine.

Last [consoles] generation being XBOX 360, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii. I agree about the PC having no "generations" to speak of. I suppose we can say the same for consoles, but it's just easy for most gamers to 'refer to' a specific time period for consoles, for example categorizing games (or consoles) of the "8-bit era", "16-bit era", etc.

Anyway, for the sake to discussion, between November 2005 (XBOX 360's release in NA), to November 2012 (Wii U's release in NA, effectively 'starting' the 8th generation) I would say that, all things considered, the very best games ever released during the last generation is in fact a trilogy, namely Mass Effect. It's essentially as important of a sci-fi universe as Star Trek was (perhaps still is) for its time. There is nothing else, in my opinion, that comes close to Mass Effect as far as science-fiction in video gaming goes. The only "equivalent" we have is fantasy-based and is the Dragon Age universe (trilogy).

I also want to mention that I would probably be one of the first here to bash on [most of] Mass Effect 3 specifically (except for its multi-player, which was great), but the overall experience from the entire trilogy cannot possibly be ignored. The original Mass Effect, along with Mass Effect 2 (not event including ME3) are both some of the very best video games ever created regardless of the "generation" they belong to. Just pick your favorite of the trilogy and don't even dare feeling bad for giving it a comfy and well-earned spot in the video gaming Hall of Fame.

I actually liked ME3, but yeah that ending. I see what they were going for but it just didn't seem to work.

Mass Effect series Interesting characters and plot Plus I loved riding around in the MACO and mining planets
S.T.A.L.K.E.R Atmosphere was chilling...not a bad story, either plus One of the best in the horror/survival genre (though a little frustrating finding weapons upgrades...too much of a good thing)
RTCW still hods its own, but not last gen?

Quake with Rygel's Texture mod and Darkplaces mod. Hell, with these mods Quake has taken on a hole new life. Still my favourite game.
