do they you give you a credit score with a free credit report??? ...typically credit scores aren't free (unless you sign for some monitoring or something).

Of course it isn't really free... didn't you see the fine print for that "Triple Advantage" credit monitoring service at the end of the commercials?

Don't do it. They sign you up for a service that you have to cancel in 30 days, or they charge you $12/month. It's not really easy to find out how to cancel either.

This is the only site that gives free credit reports (Government sponsored):

www.creditkarma.com - found the site on some financial blog and seems pretty legit.

They give a FAKO score... not Fico

True, but according to about.com, they get the score from 1 of the 3 bureaus, which should be fairly accurate.

About.com: "It?s not your FICO score, but it gives you a picture of your credit standing. Credit Karma gets your credit score from one of the three major credit bureaus, who also had a hand in coming up with the FICO scoring model."

Mine is about a 780; thats with student loans, a car loan, and zero credit card debt.

My soon-to-be wife's is 800+ with no student loans, no car loan, and no credit card debt.

We also were just approved for a mortgage not so long ago.

Mine was 810 or so when we bought a house 2 years ago. It's probably a bit lower now.

Many people don't realize the difference between a credit report and a credit score.

Your credit report is a detailed listing of your credit history...all of your accounts, number of recent inquiries, pay habits, etc are here. there is no 'score' contained in the credit report.

Your credit score is a 3 digit number that is based on your credit report. People who get their free credit reports will not get a credit score unless they sign up for some monitoring service or such.
