Your Coworker Is Sighing Heavily And Tsking,...

  • You ask them what is the matter.

  • You ignore them.

  • You pelt a closed fist back hand across their face.

  • I am a raging moron.

Eh, for me, I usually nonchalantly ask about it.

'Hey man, something wrong? You sound annoyed.'

Granted, it usually seems that the type of people that do this continue to do it... a LOT. Over the course of many years.

My co-worker has an intern in her office this summer, and he seems to make a lot of noises and toss his pen onto his desk as some sort of plea for attention. It makes her crazy.

I've told her countless times this summer that she should show him her penis.

I'm not sure if that's habit-based or born from social anxiety & a need to be invited to speak or what. I say just man up & complain about stuff in a straightforward manner like everyone else :awe:

I work with a couple people like this too. One person struggles with anxiety & I've told her multiple times to just be straight with me - I appreciate bluntness & getting to the point IRL, in terms of efficiency - but it's hard for her to overcome it, which usually results in pacing & noise-making rather than just bringing the issue right up. The other just wants to complain & takes your recognition of their plea for attention as permission to spew. I don't mind it once in awhile because hey, whinefests are fun sometimes, especially if it's a legitimate complaint, but when it's just 24/7 nonstop complaining, I don't want to hear it because it gets old. Some people just love to complain, it's almost like they get paid for it, haha. It's difficult to be assertive & tell people to take a hike if you're generally a nice person and (1) you have to work with those people on a regular basis, and (2) it's just their personality to complain about stuff. That's mostly the problem...they want to complain, and you can't change somebody else, so it creates that situation like the guy you mentioned who makes noises & does funny things like pen-tossing in a bid to get your attention so that they can complain & feel better or whatever.

And anyway, that's what Internet forums are for :colbert: :awe:

luckily that never happens in my work, but I definitely use headphones to escape certain distractions that are taking me out of my zone.

I would ask what's wrong. But if they don't answer, or give me some bs answer like "oh nothing..." followed by the same "sigh tsk tsk tsk" then I'd do the same thing back to them later in the day or another day and see how they like it.

There is a girl at one of my doctor's offices, who apparently has some sort of tic disorder. She clears her throat, and does this 'mmm' sound, with breathy sort of noise and sniffs. At times, it sounds like she is expressing some annoyance, or trying to get someone's attention, but after I heard her do it three separate days, weeks apart, it's clearly a tic disorder of some form.

I had a manager that had something similar - a lot of quick sniffles.

I worked with a guy that had that problem...but instead of constantly clearing his throat or sniffing, he whistled. Constantly. All day. Never realized he was doing it, he got so used to it. Not a really loud whistle, but enough to know it's there.

Needless to say when our group switched buildings he was put in a cubicle as far away from another person as possible. lol. I always used headphones, so it didn't bother me, but it drove some others nuts.

I had this very same co-worker and it also drove me crazy but as you said it was a nervous tic and not going to stop without therapy or drugs so you just have to ignore it. Luckily I was out of that department after a couple months.
