My co-worker has an intern in her office this summer, and he seems to make a lot of noises and toss his pen onto his desk as some sort of plea for attention. It makes her crazy.
I'm not sure if that's habit-based or born from social anxiety & a need to be invited to speak or what. I say just man up & complain about stuff in a straightforward manner like everyone else :awe:
I work with a couple people like this too. One person struggles with anxiety & I've told her multiple times to just be straight with me - I appreciate bluntness & getting to the point IRL, in terms of efficiency - but it's hard for her to overcome it, which usually results in pacing & noise-making rather than just bringing the issue right up. The other just wants to complain & takes your recognition of their plea for attention as permission to spew. I don't mind it once in awhile because hey, whinefests are fun sometimes, especially if it's a legitimate complaint, but when it's just 24/7 nonstop complaining, I don't want to hear it because it gets old. Some people just
love to complain, it's almost like they get paid for it, haha. It's difficult to be assertive & tell people to take a hike if you're generally a nice person and (1) you have to work with those people on a regular basis, and (2) it's just their personality to complain about stuff. That's mostly the problem...they want to complain, and you can't change somebody else, so it creates that situation like the guy you mentioned who makes noises & does funny things like pen-tossing in a bid to get your attention so that they can complain & feel better or whatever.
And anyway, that's what Internet forums are for
