Flicking through the channels when i happen to stumble upon "The Penguins of Madagascar" Specifically a episode titled "The Terror of Madagascar"... So it all gets to the point where the cartoon characters are all throwing a party for a newcomer to the Zoo, but this is no ordinary newcomer its some heavvy predator type. Anyways when all the animals realize what it is they go mad and scramble to the nearest exit and the elephant tries his luck with a small window (As you do..) and promptly gets stuck with his head facing outside and his butt facing inwards... So it turns 0ut to be baby and all the animals go over to pet it except the Elephant and the Lemur "Julian" who is still convinced the new animal is capable of murder (of the fluffy kind) so he wants to leave. This is where it got weird for me... The Lemur lifted up the Elephants tail and proceeded to depart through the Ellies rear end and the next frame shows him coming out of its mouth.

The Fuck did i just see..

Anyone else that cant unsee a cartoon moment?

Ren & Stimpy is rife with these.

In particular I recall an episode involving Ren selling outfits made of Stimpy's hair-balls, then Stimpy licks off all his hair & they need to find a new source .... ends up being a large mans pimple-covered hairy back!

The entire Karate Choppers episode of Spongebob is just one giant innuendo about sexual repression and its inevitable release.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and a My Little Pony episode ending on a rape joke (albeit still with a positive message).

Yeah. Or when Ren gets pec implants from Stimpy's ass and I can't even remember all of the disgusting stuff. They'd always do those cutaways that showed it in like even more detail in a more realistic art style.

Ren & Stimpy and Earthworm Jim (and there were several others, Boogerman?). Rocko's Modern Life.

Psh, Spongebob just recycled what a ton of other Nickelodeon shows did before it. I'm pretty sure Rocko had a masturbation innuendo episode, or maybe it was just a bunch of references to it.

Specific examples or it doesn't count. Rocko's was far less mature than Spongebob in approach. With Rocko's, yeah, you get fast food joints named Chokey's Chicken and whatnot, but in Spongebob it actually had meaning and went beyond a pun into a full theme (all the while abstaining from bathroom humor). Spongebob represents the pinnacle of 90's cartoon entertainment.

Rocko has a ton but that is a good one.

lol, that was good. I don't mean to shit on Rocko's or anything (although Ren & Stimpy can die) because it definitely had some great jokes, but Hillenburg reached his creative zenith with Spongebob, season 1.

Specific examples? Did you even watch Rocko's? Hell did you actually watch like any of the Nickelodeon shows in the 90s other than Spongebob? They were almost all chock full of innuendo and references that went above and beyond their "target" audiences. I know that you're a Spongebob fan so you're used to just being fed what you're supposed to find funny, but that's kinda the point, if you don't get the reference you can't have it spelled out for you, that makes it not fun/funny (cue "That's the joke" MacBaine, or the Joker's Truth "If you have to explain the joke then there is no joke" or Robot Devil "You can't just have your characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!").

Not even close, especially considering it was just barely in the 90s at all. Spongebob is not more mature, they just toned down the outright gross factor to keep it "kid friendly" while regurgitating the same stuff Nickelodeon had been doing for almost a decade in an even more overt manner. The reason Spongebob makes it into a "full theme" is because it took things to an even lower common denominator level, and caters to the people that didn't get all the jokes and references of those other shows (even though they were far from subtle about it most of the time) and then slaps them across the face with it constantly so they'll get it. Kinda like the laugh track on crap like Big Bang Theory, they have to almost outright tell you to laugh, but that just makes it less funny.

Spongebob is by nature a lesser breed. The great tongue-in-cheek comedy of the 90s was done in, and they needed shows that were more direct while also being even less offensive to appeal to an even wider audience. Its good in many ways, but ultimately is let down by dumbing down its greatest strength.

Loved Ren and Stimpy. Remember in their heydey, they made a big deal out of one of their last episodes. Commercials, trailers, etc. It was made out that Stimpy loses someone close to him, someone very personal, very emotional. Episode finally airs and we find out who/what Stimpy has lost...his fart. lol.
