Your All Time Favorite Boss/Boss Fight? (Spoilers)

One of the oldest traditions of video game culture is the boss fight at the end of a game. What are your favorite bosses/boss fights? Obviously there is no way to do this thread without spoilers so be warned.

Even though it is cliche, I have to pick Sephiroth from FF7. Not only does he have the most epic Final Fantasy boss music ever made, but his signature move is smashing a meteor through the solar system just to lay waste to your team. He wasn't even the most powerful boss in the game, but man did he put on a show. I think he is part of the reason FF7 is so consistently overrated.

Runner up for me is Giygas from Earthbound. The concept of everyone praying to beat this boss you can't hurt was cool. It reminded me a lot of the Super Spirit Bomb at the end of DBZ.

What is your favorite boss?

I might be in the minority, but the boss fight has always been one of my least favorite part of any game. So the answer is: None.

Yeah, he was a good one. How you had to strike him and them hit him with the arrows that fat fairy gave you, that was fun. Honestly though I preferred the Agahnim fight, it was fun reflecting back his magic.

Out of the many Legend of Zelda games I will always say that Phantom Ganon in OoT was the coolest boss fight. How he rode in and out of those paintings was simply amazing. One of the few "wow" gaming moments I have had, right up there with Psycho Mantis switching my Sony tv over to a HIDEO input. The hardest Zelda boss will always be Dark Link I think.

Psycho Mantis from Metal Gear solid. He reads your memory card and says stuff about how often you save and even forces you to plug in your controller to player 2 to avoid him reading your mind (movements).

hmm...

Kefka from FFVI - A boss fight where you actually can use your entire party, and there are many many iterations to go through. It took forevvver.

Psycho Mantis was pretty good too.

Was a 20 man guild Dragon raid in WOW I think, can't even remember the Dragon name from years ago.

I just thought it was funny because everyone was doing there thing and we got close to wiping at the end, and my Warlock I had started started throwing everything I had at him at stage 3.

We survived with about 6 people left, rezz's were going out and the the leader had a damage meter on and announced I finished off the Dragon with a 3 point hit off a mini DOT.

Was funny as hell, everyone was cracking up.

🙂

*edit* My bad, wasn't a console game, but wth, I'll leave it up.

There's apparently a way to beat him by just standing in the corner. Zelda II was a real grind of a game though.

The Zelda series certainly has some great boss battles. Ganon in OoT is still one of my all time faves. He's not hard but the whole atmosphere is just epic, especially for the time. The Nightmare from Link's Awakening is great too. It's a rush of classic baddies. Weirdest fight was up against Majora's Mask.

Okami, another one of my all time faves, has some great atmospheric battles too. About a third of the way through the game, you fight the 8-headed beast Orochi. Up until now, the game has been psyching you up for this fight, and it doesn't let down.

Another great fight in that game is Ninetails, the Kitsune who fancies itself as a god. What makes this one unique is he uses your own Celestial Brush against you, which really threw me for a loop first play-through. I hate the Oni Island dungeon (damn you saw race) but that epic fight makes it all worth it.

i think tyrant from RE1 is up there with the best bosses ever in a game. that battle on the rooftop was just so epic, and it was time based as well so if you didnt' do it quick enough, you were f'd.

i also think that mbison and the whole balrog, vega, sagat, then bison ladder in general in sf2 was amazing back in the day.

Either the final boss in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 or Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Both of them have absolutely amazing music and are epic as hell. I guess the final boss in Sonic 3 & Knuckles slightly beats the one in Sonic 2 because there's more to it. In Sonic 2, there's just the Robotnik mech thing and in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, there's many stages of it.

I didn't even get to see that attack because I was so over leveled. It was a while ago, but I think I just used Knights of the Round a couple times and I won. It felt so underwhelming. The next time I play the game, I'll make sure to not get to over leveled and I won't use Knights of the Round.

I generally am not a huge fan of them, either. They have often bothered me for some reason. I really liked the pseudo-boss fight stuff in shadow of mordor: badasses, but not quite bosses. The problem with bosses is they change up the rules of the game only for one fight. They also often cheat badly with stupid and annoying crap.

The good thing is not all games have bosses and they do just fine. I prefer epic battles at the end of a game against a large numbe of foes than one insane single guy.

JRPG bosses are the worst. You either beat up on them until they do some move that one shots your group, or you are so OP yourself it's not even a fight.

The Death Egg mech in S3&K was a great fight. Battle the big mech, destroy the egg mobile, then just when you think you're done, a chase through the debris field as Hyper Sonic.

Sonic 2's final boss is harder though.

I think I like bosses that are memorable rather than enjoying the fight. Master Hand on the original Super Smash Bros was a neat idea.

Also the end boss in Streets of Rage, who poses the question "Would you consider becoming my right hand man? (And standing on this trapdoor)", and answering yes makes you fall back to do the previous level again.

In fairness, the Mordor bosses were terrible encounters. You did almost nothing in them, so they weren't even fights.

i second Psycho Mantis as best boss encounter, although i gotta mention Myrtani the Aurak, in Champions of Krynn; nothing really great about the fight, but the story and chase leading up to it were great.

The final boss in Chrono Trigger always just felt like I had no chance, so I always remember that one.

Also Ruby Weapon (I think? The under water one in FFVII) was actually somewhat of a challenge. I didn't really LIKE it, but it felt rewarding when you won.

And if we count PC games, The Lich King in WoW was always an awesome fight. I liked a lot of bosses in that game.

One of my favorites is I forget the name of the game but you go up against this boss and he uses his weak weapons against you and you beat him but then he morphs into a bigger boss with some stronger weapons but you can still beat him and he morphs AGAIN and changes up his attacks between weapons and brute force and you have to change your strategy depending on what type of attack he is using and you can tell if you see the weapons in his hands but you have to be ready to change up your tactics!

FF VI final boss, Kefka, was the first one that came to mind. The fight was great.

The hardest Zelda boss will always be Dark Link I think.

Kneel in the corner and stab repeatedly. Shadow Link continues to walk into the attack.

I beat him by using shield and jump. Jump away and at the top of your jump, fall back to him and stab him in the head.

The final boss in Chrono Trigger always just felt like I had no chance, so I always remember that one.

The final boss in Chrono Trigger was fun. Ruby Weapon was in the desert. Emerald Weapon was in the ocean.

My friend hit Lucky 7s on Emerald Weapon. Lucky 7s is a special attack. When your health hits 7,777 health, you attack 77 times for 7,777 damage an attack. He told me after he did this and he had no strategy guide to know about it. He called me and was like, YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE WHAT JUST HAPPENED !!!

You're not alone there, I hate boss fights with a passion, especially boss fights where you have to kill the boss several times (without a save in-between). Many are the jRPGs that I have abandoned in the last segment of the game because of boss fights.
