i know a guy who does youtube on the side of his real job and gets like 400-500$ per month. just records a piece of music once every week or so, and gets a lot of views and adsense clicks.

i have thought about trying it, but too lazy 🙁

There's a guy who gets tons of views just posting clips of the old DC cartoons.. I wonder how much he makes..

Why is it that everyone else can add copyrighted audio to their gaming videos and when I do YouTube mutes it or takes the video down? Bull crap! :colbert:

I don't begrudge these guys or their success. The professionals in e-sports have to spend a ridiculous amount of time every day to stay at the top of their game (pun intended). You could say their careers aren't going to lead to anything in the long-term, and you're probably right. However, many of them are making quite a lot of money for people their age and they aren't out buying $250,000 cars. Generally speaking, they come from good backgrounds and know they can't blow all of their money. They typically share rented houses with their teammates.

That's good, because the likelihood that they will have a long-lasting career is very low. When you get older your reactions just can't keep up with the younger guys anymore, for the most part. E-sports 'athletes' may end up having a shorter average shelf-life than your regular athletes, because the popular games they built skill in aren't going to last 10 years (Counter-Strike and a couple of others may be a notable exception).

Then there are the folks who make serious bank streaming based on their personality, rather than an affiliation with any particular professional competition (Lirik, eg). They are probably even more rare.

Both types are very rare, though. I would never recommend that ANYONE make it their primary goal in life.

Man I knew I was poor, but am I the only person here that wasn't making 15k a month at 21? I know this is ATOT and all but still. Hell, I wasn't making half that. Even if they make that every other year, that comes out to over $50k or more a year to play video games.

geez.. I thought the new site owners would stop letting peasants in

And he wasn't even very good at games.

While EG's iNcontroL wasn't their best player, he was still pretty good at the game. Although, just being a "foreigner" at StarCraft (a foreigner in StarCraft is anyone that isn't Korean) already puts him behind in the scene. (The best "American" player is arguably Polt, who's actually a Korean studying at UT Austin.) Anyway, as to how he married Anna Proser, just keep in mind that he'd answer "yes, a lot" to the question, "Bro, do you even lift!?" I forget where I saw the video on him (probably during some StarCraft tournament), but the dude's pretty strong.

Say goodby to trophy wife, any woman THAT hot is not gonna stick around long with a broke other..

It's not like she's some random chick. He most likely met her while she was doing announcing stuff for StarCraft tournaments. That's where I've seen her before.

Just googled him to see what he's been up too. He is actually washed up now but never really brought home the dough to begin with. He's one of the guys that never made it, like a washed up guy on an NFL practice squad but with an extremely lower income. I believe his wife gets paid more than him currently and is working for the team he use to play for. I doubt she brings home much either.

I've seen him do a bit of casting as well. He's actually not too bad at it either. He may not be as bombastic as people like Day9 or Tasteless+Artosis (they're mostly in Korea anyway), but he's still good with his commentary.

He tried to make it as a pro, like a pro athlete. He got on a pro team and practiced 10 hrs a day but never won any significant tournament and the game he played died.

Edit
He currently does stream but it doesn't seem to be working for him. How much does he currently earn? Your guess is as good as mine. Doesn't seem like it's a reasonable amount to live off of.

You are so clueless. He's the face of EG, the biggest NA team in existence. His earnings in the past 4 years haven't had anything to do with his game performance, he has a huge fan base and is one of the most popular SC2 players (pro or not) of all time.

I don't know about the rest of you basement dwellers, but if given the choice of watching some gamer nerd yelling into a mic as he plays a game or watching some hot girl shaking her knockers and whatever else in a cam (or in person), I'll take the second option. Both have a shelf life, but I'm guessing there's more chicks making more money doing that, than some guy playing a game.

I guess because I think watching sports is...boring as hell in general.

Wait, so you just watch porn all day?

I'd rather watch a baseball game or SC2 tournament over 95% of the crap on tv these days. If you actually play the game you understand what is happening, how hard it is to play at that level, and get to watch people cast/analyze it and entertain you at the same time. JUST LIKE ANY OTHER SPORT

I'd rather is more what I was saying. I can't stand watching sports, for the most part. I understand them fine, I just find them boring. I played LoL, SC2, etc - and some sports, so I can appreciate the aspect of it all, I don't care to watch others play it.

I'd rather watch something I haven't watched or do, than watch someone else doing.

As with most non traditional jobs, there are a million people who want to do it but only a few make any money doing it. Also, for those who do, they probably work really hard at it. 60+ hour weeks. So basically, get a job at McDonalds. You will probably make a lot more working there.

I've been trying to increase my presence in Youtube and Twitch gaming, I'd love to make real money playing games lol.

My Youtube and Twitch channels are in my sig.

*Le shameless plug*

Why feel limited when you can get the best of both worlds? There are plenty of girls in low-cut tops that like to show off the cleavage with their low-angle webcam shots or doing things like push-ups -- yes, I have seen that happen. 😛 It was nice.... :$
