anybody watching this?
I thought it would be good but the last couple of episodes just didn't do it for me. It's basically about a young American who gets elected Pope, and becomes a super asshole who literally hates everybody.
So other than the American angle, a documentary of every Pope for 2000 years.
Hey, Pope Frank seems like a pretty good dude, as far as Popes go.
HA! I just started watching last night and posted on FB about saying I wasn't sure if I liked it or hated it. I flip flop every 10 mins
In general, I guess that's a sign of a well written show that it keeps me intersted and wanting more.
I put this show in a "would-recommend-but-don't-blame-me-if-you-hate-it" catagory
The series, a joint production of HBO, Sky and Canal Plus, won raves when it aired in Europe, but with its over-the-top plot and rococo themes, it just comes across as Eurotrash -- intellectually pretentious, but it sure is pretty to look at it.
Hollywood hates Catholics....we get it already. This show is just a hate fest. Let's turn the Holy Father into a dirt bag, how original.

This was conceived, written, and directed by a single Italian dude. This isn't Hollywood, but it is funded by HBO. If you have any familiarity with Italian cinema or Italian culture, which as you probably know is very Catholic, there is a long, long modern history of criticism and cynicism directed at the Catholic church. This is very common, even though there is still devotion directed toward the institution and, especially, the Pope. Italians just have a history of "cynical devotion" towards the church and The Vatican, as bizarre as that may sound.
So, this isn't Hollywood--this is a modern Italian auteur operating within the space that is very common to him.
That being said, this show is very nasty regarding the Catholic church but more specifically, the Holy See. It is rather unrelenting and I can't quite tell if it is meant to be a direct indictment of the church as it is, or merely a rather fabulist interpretation of a "what-if" scenario if the contemporary church was held under siege by a fascist Pope. I see a lot of Calvino and Fellini flowing through Sorentino's (whatever his name is) mind in this show. Bear in mind, the vast majority of Pope's over the previous millenia+ have been downright awful, horrible, power-hungry individuals. So, this kind of rule isn't unfamiliar to the history of the church, it's just very shocking in our enlightened era.
Some people would praise the historical accuracy. The "Holy" <barf> Father has been a dirtbag throughout most of the history of the church. If the show made him even remotely kind or compassionate it would be fantasy.
Most men were dirt bags through history, the church is made of men so it isn't surprising. Today you could point out police, politicians, lawyers, corporations, etc. as dirtbags. Today's church is mostly ignored and doesn't have any political power.
To make a Show or Film about the church today would be pretty boring and nobody would watch so they need to amp it up with shocking behavior. This only got made because HBO and SKY money was put into it. They seem to revel in this kind of drama.
that goes with any topic: It wouldn't be a show if it was boring and normal. It wouldn't be funded if it was boring and normal. The subject here is the church, and a dramatic version of such which is pure fiction.
I hardly see the issue.
I want subscribe to your newsletter and rent a wife.Name another organization that sold the wives and children of its members into slavery to make sure the organization got their money when they died. Just one.
Name another organization that through 2000 years of systemic pedophilia did everything in their power to protect and enable the predators to prey on the children, did nothing to protect the kids and when caught plead bankruptcy to avoid paying restitution to the victims despite sitting on something north of $20 billion in assets.
And todays church has plenty of power around the world and wields that power for evil more than for good. They just don't do it here. Read up a little on what your supposedly "Holy" <barf> bunch of scumbags has been doing in Africa for the last 50 years.
There has never been an organization more greedy, more corrupt, more venal top to bottom than your "Holy" <barf> church. There have been bad politicians, bad cops, bad lawyers and bad corporations, but their reach has been been small, short-lived and confined to a few people. No other organization has caused as much damage to as many people worldwide over thousands of years. That is something that only your "holy" <barf> church has accomplished.
And throughout history entertainment media has done plenty of material on corrupt judges, corrupt lawyers, corrupt politicians, dirty cops, scummy car salesmen, etc etc etc. And I don't hear you whining about any of that. Portray bad cops accurately and you seem to be fine about it. Make a movie about corrupt corporations and that's just art imitating life, you don't care. But portray the church honestly as the scumbags they are and you cry like a little bitch.
