Read yes.

Writing no. The z's were really fucked up.

I'd be happy if schools dropped it and focused on math more during grades 3-4. Kids there ought to be doing algebra.

I can't read it unless it was written by a teacher because everyone else who writes cursive writes absolutely horribly.

It's not going to be a lost art despite what old farts think.

Age 28. Can't write, can read about 50% of cursive.

People who write in cursive do so because it is "faster," but I've found that most people who are actually fast at writing cursive also write it illegibly. All their letters look the same and run together. There have been a few times at work when a coworker leaves a note for me and I have to go ask them what they wrote.

My printed handwriting isn't the prettiest or the fastest, but it's more readable than 99% of cursive and fast enough to do the job.

I'm 31, I can read it just fine. Writing it is a lost art though. I don't even think I can "properly" write my name anymore, it just comes out as a bunch of scribbles that vaguely resembles what the cursive should look like.

Learned it in 3rd grade and was told to use it until 5th.

Went to middle school in the 6th grade and every teacher told us to never, ever, use it for their work.

I haven't actively written cursive for close to 20 years. I can still do it, and I can read it, but its slower than printing for me at this point. Nearly all hand written forms want printed info. I don't really see the point in learning it anymore.

I end up writing a mix of cursive and print. I can read it just fine and write all cursive if need be, it's too slow though. Unlike some of you ignorant fucks I'm literateish.

Kids should be taught it enough to read it, but the most focus should be on typing. Actual real typing. Not this pecking cell phone bullshit.

I can read it, but all I can write is my name. I just don't use it for anything other than my signature.

I do know someone who can't even read it: http://abcnews.go.com/US/george-zimmerman-witness-cantt-read-letter-wrote-shooting/story?id=19504826

34 and I cannot write cursive really. I can read it just fine though. I forgot how to make most of the cursive letters so I just don't use it.

Wake County schools (Raleigh) have removed it from the curriculum and no longer teach it.

Being the most important thing ever (according to teachers at the time), they forced us to learn it in elementary school. Then promptly quit giving a shit in high school.

Hooray US school system.

I would doubt the non-retardation of anyone that can't read it. Writing it is just a pain in the ass, though. Even the people who use it tend to use kind of a corrupted version that omits the silly parts.

I can barely read it, and sometimes I write in psuedo-cursive when taking notes really fast, but I couldn't write in actual cursive. I'm 20.

Age 25, and yeah. Was forced to use cursive from 3rd grade to 8th grade.

Honestly, aside from a signature I've never understood the point.

I'm 25 now, and for the past 3 years I haven't even bothered to use it when I sign. It's first letter of first name then a few squiggles, then first letter of last name and a few more squiggles, then I go back and put a few lines in like I'm crossing Ts.

Cursive is good for nothing but aesthetics and quills. Since I don't write with quills and my penmanship is terribad whenever I ever need something written in cursive I change the font in Word.

Can you write or read cursive?
Just wondering if the younger generation is still learning cursive.

27, could read and write it while in school. Haven't used it since, it's lost to me. Use it or lose it.

To be clear, I cannot write it, and struggle to read it.

GIVE US A POLL!

I never really learned to do it, even though I had to wait a bit before word processors and computers became widespread enough that my ineptitude didn't matter any more.
Surely everyone can _read_ it though, as long as its not really badly written?

I did once, an eternity ago, learn shorthand. Forgotten it completely of course. Very surprised to find (via google) that apparently its still in use.

Depends quite extensively on whether the person who wrote it can WRITE cursive! ;)

My mother was a 2nd grade school teacher, before she got married and raised a family. All of us kids knew how to write & read cursive, before we ever started the 2nd grade (which is when it was taught, when I was a kid). In fact, we didn't get away with much, school-wise, until we hit high school, and started taking classes (higher math, chemistry, etc) that Mom hadn't ever taken.

I'm 31 and I can sort of read cursive and sort of write it. I'm much slower at both than with print.

I hate cursive.

People who can't write in cursive seem to barbaric.

It is like not knowing how to play chess.
