But no. No native support for fucking USB keyboards.

My comp crashed and when I rebooted it, it wanted to do a disk check. No thanks, so I "press any key to skip" and nothing happens. And it's been sitting here at "CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors" with no progress indication for the last 45 minutes. I even have the USB keyboard support thing turned on in the BIOS.

This was especially a problem with XP. I had to go bust out my POS PS/2 keyboard that had been hiding in my closet for 10 years.

weak, I know. But I'm annoyed.

Do you have USB Legacy Support enabled in the computer BIOS? That's what it's there for. If it's not turned on, Widows won't see the keyboard when in Safe Mode.

According to this HP Support page, Microsoft has a KB article (941600) and a USB rollup for Vista that solves many USB device issues. Interestingly, the HP page also says that enabling Legacy USB Support can cause problems with Vista. :(

If it STILL doesn't work in Safe Mode, I guess you need to keep a PS2 keyboard around. Don't know WHAT you do if there's no PS2 port on the PC.

You can use a USB to PS2 adapter.

That would be equivalent to using a USB keyboard, so would not work around any issues with USB keyboard support.

Ditto. Wireless USB Mouse and Keyboard. I haven't had an issue with Bios or Safemode in years. XP or Vista.

Same here. Must be a hardware manufacturer issue.

Gigabyte, Asus, and Abit all did this for me.

Possible however biggest clue is this part
My comp crashed and when I rebooted it, it wanted to do a disk check

Obviously something has effected USB devices with the crash.

As to USB support in Vista well lets see what I have that works fine in my Vista x64.

USB keyboard
USB Razer mouse
USB 2.0 External powered 7 port hub(Nec chipset)
USB Thrustmaster gamepad
USB Canon i4500 Printer
USB 2.0 External Lite-ON DVD burner
USB 4GB Flash drive
USB 256MB flash drive(very old model)
USB Trust 56k modem(backup for broadband)
USB Trust Bluetooth device(Toshiba chipset)
USB 2.0 Leadtek DTV Tuner
USB MP4 player 2GB
USB Lighted mouse pad plus a few more I can't be bothered to list but you see my point :).

Gigabyte, Asus, and Abit all did this for me.

Glad I use trusty Epox, never lets me down.

You tried reinstalling chipset drivers for your board, also tried a different USB keyboard(it could of died) ,btw do other USB devices work ok?

That's odd, I've always been able to use my mouse (logitech mx518) and keyboard (benq wireless, usb dongle) on safe mode in both XP and Vista.

This is almost certainly a BIOS issue. During the early boot phase (when the disk check occurs), the USB drivers haven't been loaded yet. At this point Windows still relies on BIOS calls for input. Definitely look for other USB boot settings. You should disable "boot to USB device" support and see if that helps.

This was especially a problem with XP. I had to go bust out my POS PS/2 keyboard that had been hiding in my closet for 10 years.

You could try a different keyboard too, just in case there is an incompatibility between your BIOS and your KB.

Actually, the problem here is not Safe Mode, but early boot phase. Only so-called "boot-critical" drivers are loaded at the time of the disk check. USB is not considered a boot-critical driver, so hidusb.sys won't be loaded for the prompt legoman describes. The BIOS still manages the USB devices at this stage.

If you do eventually boot into Safe Mode, Windows will re-initialize the USB controllers and load all the standard USB drivers, including the USB HID class driver. By the time Winlogon apears, these drivers should be loaded and your USB keyboard and mouse will be managed by Windows.

My USB IBM Model M clone keyboard (save for the USB and different color scheme) along with my Logitech G5 USB mouse have always worked in safe mode in XP SP2 32bit Pro.

All of my USB peripherals work fine and have always worked with vista,

Razer Mouse
Keyboard
Card Reader 6 in 1
Printer via USB to Parallel (surprised by this one since it did not work right in XP)
2 External Hard Drives
Sidewinder Joystick
Belkin N52 Game Pad
Generic USB Microphone
Multiple Thumb Drives

I'm not ruling out that it is retarded that Vista can't see your keyboard...

Topic Title: You'd think after being around for 12 years
Topic Summary: that Vista would support it

Unfortunately Vista gets blamed for everything including WW1,WW2,fall of the Roman empire and also EVERTHING in general.

Be nice to see some honest constructive criticism for Vista ,but you got more chance of me winning the lottery.

This cold of mine is terrible must be a Vista virus :p .

BIOS is the first thing that supports USB keyboard/mouse before OS even boots up so look there for your problem, check for BIOS update or support from manufacturer of board in question.Obviously as I've already stated try a different USB keyboard to rule out a faulty keyboard.

Any update on your problem?

it wasn't a jab at Vista in particular, more at Microsoft for not natively supporting USB keyboards/mice after the technology has been around since 1996.

Strange. I installed vista from scratch with a bluetooth kb & mouse, bluetooth kb & usb wireless mouse and xp with wireless kb & mouse. Never had one problem with PC recognizing the wireless/bluetooth kb & mice attached to install OS, or alter BIOS.

I'll just throw this out in case it might be helpful.

Some USB keyboards have a "Function" key (F with a square around it, or some such) that changes the functionality of the function keys row on the keyboard. For whatever bizarre non-reason, all of them I've seen actually default to having those function keys NOT MAPPED AS FUNCTION KEYS! (Why in the world would they do this?)

So, you power up. If your system asks you to hit a specific function key, let's say F2, in order to get into the BIOS immediately following the POST, you can jab away at that F2 key, and the system will just go ahead and load the operating system. The trick, in this case, is to first hit that F key, and then hit F2 immediately after POST. Same trick works for getting into Safe mode -- hit F, then F8.

I wasn't absolutely sure from the descriptions as to whether or not this might be the problem for some folks.
