You wouldn't download a lawnmower

No, I wouldn't. Doesn't seem very practical.

I mean it is interesting, but there are other cool 3D printer DIY/maker projects that are more useful.

i would roll my own, but who needs to 3d print any of that? a sheet of good plywood, some aluminum flashing and a few l brackets would be just as good and cheaper than the parts they printed. i would require it to be a bit more aware than the current model though.

No, but I would spend $10 on enough salt to kill my lawn and make sure nothing grew again if it came to that...

Next someone will make one that'll accept a smartphone, and use its camera, processor, and image-processing software to make a smarter mower.

well you could download one, but then they'll just modify the DMCA to prevent lawnmower piracy too.
Opensecrets.org says John Deere has spent more than $1M/yr on lobbying in some recent years, but it probably wasn't to combat printable lawnmowers.

Sadly with how ridiculous the copyright system is now days I could easily see it get in the way of 3D printing and making it illegal to actually print certain things, like parts.

I wouldn't download a lawn mower with UDP since the packets might get out of order and it could be dangerous! TCP should generally be safe enough to get the packets correctly.

That got me thinking, I wonder if 3D printer streaming will become a thing. The copyright industry will eventually grip the idea of being able to print stuff, and they'll DRM the shit out of it, and you'll only be able to print stuff through a streaming service. Basically Netflix for physical objects. Imagine your net going down in the middle of a print. 😛 "Buffering.... server error. Print failed." Doh, another dud. 😛

I want to eventually get into robotics, I can see 3D printing being pretty awesome for that, can make all the mechanical moving parts like gears and stuff, probably even tracks.

3D printing with wax could be interesting for metal castings too. You print the object out of wax, then put it in some kind of ceramic, let it cure, then heat up the wax so you can pour it out as a liquid, and pour in the molten metal. I wonder if this is already a thing, it must be.
