here's what i have:

antec sonata case
swapped stock antec PSU fan with a panaflo L1A 80mm
2 120mm yateloons at low RPM
zalman 7000-cu 92mm copper heatsink at lowest RPM
zalman vf700 at lowest RPM

this rig is nearly silent. all the money spent on aftermarket cooling was well worth it. :)

If I can ever get more cash for some parts, I want to get the VF700 cooler for my video card and the AC Freezer 64.
I've swapped the stock Sonata 120mm case fan with the Nexus 120mm silent fan, but that's about it right now.
I need to open up my Xclio to change that thing, and get a passive heatsink for the NB to replace the screamer.

lian li pc7b aluminum case ->
panaflo 120mm fans front and rear speedfaned down to 40% usage
lian li 120mm hdd cage w/ fans speedfaned down to 40% usage

tt big typhoon ->
panaflo 120mm fan speedfaned down to 40% usage
side 120mm air duct

seasonic 500w ps -> 120mm fan

CnQ enabled ->
1150MHz @ 1.15V idle / low load ->30C
2900MHz @ 1.39V full load -> 42C

might not be the quietest, but can be pretty silent AND have adequate cooling when necessary. note: this setup is staged in living room as htpc.

I don`t think I have the quietest PC because I`m not done building it yet.
But, a few components of note to anyone who`s interested:
Coolermaster Centurion 5
Coolermaster LED fans
and I want to order Samsung Spinpoint hard drive, BenQ DVD-RW, Seasonic power supply.

Hello like-minded modder fellows and silence enthusiasts

Well, actually I don't want to mess up with you guys. I just know that I have momentarily the quietest PC (ANUBIS, Intel) of all I ever had. Now I really need to put my ear very close to the case for hearing anything inside, and I'm not talking about WC.
But as I had before perhaps the loudest PC of all, I would for sure win easily in a before/after competition.

If you want me to compete against you, make a donation for I could buy the Zalman TNN300 PC first.

It is useless to compare quiet computers without knowing what sort of CPU you're running, and the temperatures of everything in the case. Turn down the fans to their lowest rpm, ignore the temps...you'll have a quiet system for a while.

I run a P4-2.6 with a Ninja (no fan), one rear case fan (globe 120mm) usually at 5V, an internally mounted PSU with a Sanyo Petit Ace usually at 4.5V. I use a laptop drive (less heat, no noise)......all in a heavily modded/dampened HP case.

The temp of the CPU maxes at 47C running a burn prog at 100%. At that point the case fan has speeded up and I can hear it......Till that point this computer is completely silent from the front. From the rear I can hear the fan only at 12" or less.

Fewer fans equals less noise (usually)......visit SPCR to check out quiet computing. Anandtech is pretty useless for quieting info.

My wife's computer:

Lian Li PC-7BW-Plus chassis
Antec Phantom 350W PSU (passive)
Connect3D X800GTO 16 pipe modded (passive)
Abit K8N board with Zalman passive chipset cooler
200GB Seagate
A64 3200+ @2.4GHz
Zalman 7700AlCu HSF set to PWM-30 in BIOS (range 0-127)
two CoolerMaster 120MM Silent LED fans on Zalman fan mates, turned all the way down
noisiest part is blowhole fan, 80mm Arctic Cooling 3TC (temp controlled) on Zalman fan mate turned down (so turned down AND temp controlled, still can hear it)

Hehe, its a bit unfair comparison but.

AMD Sempron 3000+
Biostar TForce 6100-754
Samsung HM040HI 40.0GB SATA Laptop Harddrive

Underclocked and undervolted to 1.6GHz/1.125V

Stock heatsink (Fan turns itself off...) CPU runs at a HOT 26C at idle and 30C at load.

I know this is unfair, but I know my Legacy comp is quieter than all of yours

Dell Dimension 4100
Pentium III-1GHz Coppermine w/ Fanless HSF
1 80mm NMB case fan (it only draws about 16 cfm and is dead silent)
FoxConn PSU with 1 fan (also silent)

this thing isn't "NEARLY" silent, it is silent-you don't know if it's on unless you look at power switch light

HAH ;)

-Enermax 495 V2.0 (fans set at 30% of max speed)
-Two 120mm x 38mm medium speed Panaflos with two Zalman Fanmate 2 controllers (fans set at a fixed rpm, regardless of case or CPU temp)
-Zalman 7700Cu with 120mm fan (fan sets between 880 and 960 rpm)
-Seagate 200GB/8MB cache 7200.7 Plus PATA
-GF4 Ti4200 with custom passive heat sink
-Antec SLK3000B case
-ECS NF3 with Sempron 3100 130nm at 2.44GHz (cool n quiet enabled)

CPU idles between 26 and 30C. Average temp is 31C. Max temp at 25C ambient is 46C.

CPU cooler fan is OFF 95% of the time (no power to fan if CPU temp < 40C).

PC is inaudible at 0.7 meter with Prime95 in MAX HEAT MODE (all five fans running at max speed). Room's background noise floor of 23 dBA as measure by a BK SPL meter.

- Antec Sonata II with duct removed, stock power supply (antec smartpower 2.0 450watt)
- XP-90 with a medium-speed 92mm Panaflo...using mobo's built-in speed control to turn it down to about 50% speed (according to SpeedFan). That's pretty much silent.
- stock antec 120mm tri-speed fan set on low in back and 120mm nexus orange fan, undervolted to 5V in front
- zalman nb-47J on the chipset, passive cooling for the video card
- Seagate 160GB PATA mounted using the antec HD tray, with the soft grommets, and a Seagate 80GB SATA resting on a block of foam on an antec HD tray. The SATA HD is very loud compared to the IDE one (wish I had done more research on that), but on the block of foam, it's reasonably quiet.

It's definitely not what I would call silent, but I'm very picky, especially when I'm sleeping. I'd say it's pretty darn quiet. The antec tri-speed is probably the loudest part of the system, and that might be only because it's in the exhaust (direct exit path for the noise). I did try putting the nexus fan in the back, since it's much quieter, and it did help, but my temps jumped way too high for comfort. Right now, the CPU idles between 28-33C (overclocked and with cool n quiet turned on), and at full load, around 50C. Ambient is around 18-20C.
