You think people would learn what not to take on an airplane

We took my mom back to Lansing airport which is about the size of the airport in "Wings" and there was one guy in front of us when we were checking in her baggage who argued about it. Now keep in mind this is a little airport during a slow flying time and only one ashtray out 8 that are out front. The TSA guy told him to leave out front on the ashtray because when he got to his destination there would be more laying on the ash tray when he got there.

Am I the only one that understood nothing of this?

Edit People should know by know about taking lighters (and snakes) on planes but yet at one little airport during a slow flying, look at all the lighters. This was just one ashtray out of 8 at the airport.

People try to take lighters on planes. You can't take a lighter on a plane. So people leave them on the ash tray at the airports. People at their destination airport have most likely done the same thing, so you get "your" lighter back.

Yep, I'll join the crowd as not understanding the OP at all. Only reading the following replies did I start to get an understanding of what's going on.

OP forgot to use the word "LIGHTER" in his origingal posting, hence the confusion.

Yep. I clicked the link first, if I hadn't I probably wouldn't have understood it either.

You know what's great? The lighter ban was enacted in response to the shoe bomber. You know what else is great? The shoe bomber didn't even use a lighter, he used matches. You know what's even greater than that? Matches are still allowed in your carry-on.

The ban on lighters went into effect in (about) April 05. Before that, you could take matches and lighters on the planes. Last November, I had to toss my zippo that I've had for almost forever . Didn't know about the ban, and didn't have time to get a package and mail it home to myself...Oh well...just a lighter.

A picture is worth 1000 words.

That's the great anti-terrorism effort working for you! Would someone think about the children?

Lighters are now recursively banned as a liquid anyway.

Oh, and there were NO lighters in the BWI airport ashtrays when I was there Tuesday.
