You should not smell gas at all if you have gas appliances, right?

I never had gas appliances but a friend who just moved into a new apartment said she smells gas faintly (gas stove). The apt manager said that's normal and it goes away when you use the stove. Sounds totally wrong to me, I thought there was a pilot light always lit so no gas should be escaping.

I don't think you should be smelling gas at all. If the pilot light is on and it still smells, then that means there's a leak somewhere.

There should be no reason for your appliance to have a smell like that.

if the pilot light is out you'd smell it. if the pilot is turned up too high you may smell it also.

check the pilots on the range, and if it has an oven too check the pilot on it.

pilots go out all the time.

if the pilots are all lit, you might have a problem. Get a water/dishsoap (heavy on the soap) mixture and drench the gas line with it, particularly where the line is threaded..if you start to see bubbles forming, that means there is a leak there. Get it fixed.

then crack open a beer because you are a hero son!

I think sometimes they may have a small odor to them. My hot water heater always smells like propane. Do one of two things, either have someone look at it, or light a match and hope for the best.

If you small gas, then there's gas in the air. If that's ok with you, well fine then forget it. I'll read about your friend in the paper when her apartment burns to the ground. If not, call the utilities.

Man, what kind of sh!tty stove still has a pilot light?

Heh. Pretty much any domestic gas-fired appliance with a pilot light is obsolete and should be replaced. Electronic igniters are safer and save energy at the same time.

It's possible that they may be smelling burned gas. The odourant that is used in gas when burned can sometimes produce a faint but distinctive smell - slightly different to the smell of raw gas.

You should not be able to smell raw gas, if the stove is used correctly. Certainly not after it has been switched off for more than a couple of minutes.

Yeah, no doubt. Most newer appliances have electronic pilot ignition, but there are a ton of older one still in use.

Listen, if you smell gas, call the gas company and report it. They will send somebody right over. They have all the equipment necessary to find leaks, combustible gas indicators, flame ionization units, Gastracks, liquid leak detector, whatever.

You could also smell the odor even if there are no leaks if the gas supplier adds to much mercapton in the gas. Natual gas has no smell, the odorant is added to it. If they add too much, the excess odorant doesn't burn off completely. This is especially prevelant in pilot lighted systems.

Bottom line, call and report it. It costs nothing.

We have a gas stove at home and it has an electronic igniter to light it. It takes about 3 seconds for the stove to light, but that's the ONLY time I can smell gas. When it gets shut off after cooking, there's no smell.

You should get it checked out if you can smell it all the time.

I can smell gas right when I light my gas stove because the burner is on for a second or so before the ignitor lights the burner.

But just sitting there without any burners lit you should not smell any gas.

CO is produced by incomplete combustion and is no indication whether gas is leaking or not.
