Yeah, no doubt. Most newer appliances have electronic pilot ignition, but there are a ton of older one still in use.
Listen, if you smell gas, call the gas company and report it. They will send somebody right over. They have all the equipment necessary to find leaks, combustible gas indicators, flame ionization units, Gastracks, liquid leak detector, whatever.
You could also smell the odor even if there are no leaks if the gas supplier adds to much mercapton in the gas. Natual gas has no smell, the odorant is added to it. If they add too much, the excess odorant doesn't burn off completely. This is especially prevelant in pilot lighted systems.
Bottom line, call and report it. It costs nothing.
