Unless I KNEW for sure the worthless POS could be bagged, I'd do nothing. Otherwise I'd follow through on seeing their sorry ass nabbed, including being a witness if necessary. I know security would err on the side of letting them go, if they don't actually see the pilferage.

Stuff being taken from a car is not shoplifting.

If it was my friends store I would of course stop the person.

What makes the difference in either case? 😕

Shoplifting is the act of stealing "displayed items from a store".

I would absolutely do everything I could within reason to stop a shoplifter. I hate thieves with a passion.

[edit] I have seen it 3 times. Twice I asked male & female teens what they was doing, and told them to put it back. And, one time I reported to the store cashier when I saw a woman in her mid-late 20s shoplift.

  1. You neglected to mention the other case...

In the case of my friend owning a store I would consider the theft a direct offense against my friend. It becomes personal at that point.

Keep in mind, I'm holding the ideal that a store my friend hypothetically owns would be a small sole proprietor style business.

It would be even worse for a small shop to have to deal with false arrest claims, than a large department store. Lots to lose, and little to gain. This is what was going through my mind during the whole show, and was never touched on.

One time I saw a fat little black kid at target put a handful of jewelery from a rack next to the register in his pocket. It was those rings that are stainless steel with a plastic gem in them or something, which cost a few bucks each. It was so blatant that 20 people must have seen it, but I doubt any of us cared or reported it.

You are responsible to report a crime if you witness it.

What good comes out of you getting involved?
What good comes out America that is fill with people who do not care for the society that they live in.

Do you always paint in such broad strokes?

You pick your battles in life. Teaching someone else a lesson when it really isn't any of my business is not one I care to get involved in.

It's like trying to police the speed limit on the expressways. It's not my resonsibility. It has nothing to do with not caring about my society and everything to do with doing what is best for me and my family.
