you'd have to mod your mother board to be able to crack it.

And why do you doubt mod chips won't be made?

Because it's not going to be on the motherboard. It's going to be on the CPU.
The way to hack it is going to have to be in software, because there is slim chance you will be hacking a CPU.

It would take quite a while, seeing as how the hardware is linked with a unique key to the software.

Kinda like the Xbox, huh?

Why do you think that Microsoft is not having a cow about all the people breaking into the XBox security? It enables them to make it better and harder to break without revising the processor. ;)

I think their goal is to make it as difficult as possible for the majority of consumers to pirate software/media.

must agree w/ that...

Basically MS will have to approve every program that runs on windows now, or it won't be trusted. Bill Gates will decide what is trusted and what isn't.

I'd gladly run Linux if they put out all the games for it. Problem is most games that come out, developers don't bother with a Linux port.
It's a bit of a pain in the @ss to have to switch os'es several times a day just because I want to play mafia or Simcity.

I'm going use Windows 2000 forever.

I'd consider Linux once it is able to run with the snappiness and performance of Windows.

XP wasn't cracked. A corp-edition serial was leaked by some dumbass photographer @ dell.

If the serial # was not leaked do you think it would have stopped them? The serial # was just the easier way to go. The betas were cracked all along so I don't figure the final would have been much of a challenge.

So what will happen with in house development. That would kill off any programming being done on windows because you would need to get microsofts approval to compile code. And how do they plan to stop buffer under runs in other peoples programs when they can't even keep them out of their own code?

We've been over this once before already. Check out this thread for some good analysis of the current specs and laws on it.

Where did you gather that info?

I don't have a problem going to linux if MS really does this. Linux is becoming more user friendly with every release.

I wouldnt mind going back to Linux. I had Red Hat 7.2 for a while there....

It's common knowledge.

One of those 3D spin & admire the pretty laptop - Forgot all about the XP key on the bottom of the laptop.

I read in Forbes, in china, at least 95% of MS products are pirated and sells for as low as $1.50 at any bazzario, cops do nothing, it's a different culture over there about intellectual property... Sometimes I feel sorrry for MS, but I will not pay for this added protections and inconvienance... LINUX for me when this rolls out.

It already performs and is faster than windows...

the only thing is the software support. (read: games)

The infamous 'Devil's own' cd-key I thought was obtained from a programmer within MS itself. I had a photograph a while ago of the original guy holding the first burned copy of the cd in front of the windows XP countdown... with 28 days left to go.

As for cracking Palladium, it's going to be a lot harder than you think. Microsoft will not allow another corporate CD-key fiasco and beyond that, Palladium is also hardware-based. I will switch to linux or keep using XP for as long as possible.

Totally untrue. I have messed with Mandrake, Red Had, and BSD.... None can open a simple web browser or really any program for that matter as fast as my same exact machine running Win2k or WinXP.

Thunderbird 1.33, 512MB PC2100, WD12000JB, GF3....can't compare. Linux just doesn't feel...optomized...
