you know your addicted to seti when... you find out someone has a computer and the first thing you ask is "Can I make your computer look for aliens?"

When you write a special purpose Linux setup just to crunch on 16 unique machines.

And then when, on finding several network connections aren't available, you go in on a Friday night just to rewrite the system to cache 6 WUs...

I'm hoping to flush 12 on Monday. :D

Not so much SETI in particular but..

When you look at a machine and realize it's not using the idle cycles for ANY kind of DC project and you see it as a terrible waste - yeah, you're addicted. ;)

I'm not addicted to SETI. I can quit anytime I want to. I just don't want to right now. ;) :p

If any of you want to quit cold turkey, let me know and I'll go into work and 'turn off' the SETI servers! :Q

you know your addicted to seti when...

you stay at work late on Friday setting up a NIC, network drivers, etc. so a previously idle PIII-600 can start crunching WUs! :Q

When you put off buying tires for your car because you got a good deal on some upgrade parts for your PC. :D

When you develop backup procedures at work that will backup My Documents and Outlook PST files to the network (a good idea in either case) so that the desktops will have to stay turned on overnight.

:D

When you walk by a huge computer lab (100+ PCs) at your son's college, and you almost feel like crying because the idle cycles are going to waste and there's nothing you can do.

With apologies to Robert Palmer, for mutilating of song of his that I actually rather like. Apologies to my friends on Team AnandTech, my strength is in writing original lyrics, not doing parodies of the work of others. Thus, this parody may be open to revision at a later date.

To the tune of Addicted To Love by Robert Palmer
ADDICTED TO STATS
By: ShotgunSteve

Your PC's on, but you're not home
Your cycles are not your own
Your proc heats, your chips bake
Another fan is what it takes

You can't sleep, you can't eat
There's no doubt, you're in deep
Your money's tight, you want speed
Another comp is all you need

Whoa, you watch those graphs when they spike and when they're flat, oh yeah

Pretty obvious you think that's where it's at

Gonna have to face it, you're addicted to stats

You see the signs, but you can't read
You're runnin' at a different speed
You overclock to double time
Another crunch and you'll be fine, a one track mind

You can't be saved
Higher stats is all you crave
And late at night you always dream
Of CobraICE joining the Team

Whoa, you seem to think that you know where it's at, oh yeah

Next time that we race we'll stomp DSLR flat

Gonna have to face it, you're addicted to stats

Might as well face it, you're addicted to stats
Might as well face it, you're addicted to stats
Might as well face it, you're addicted to stats
Might as well face it, you're addicted to stats
Might as well face it, you're addicted to stats

Your PC's on, but you're not home
Your cycles are not your own
Your proc heats, your chips bake
Another fan is what it takes

Whoa, you watch those graphs when they spike and when they're flat, oh yeah

Pretty obvious you think that's where it's at

Gonna have to face it, you're addicted to stats

Might as well face it, you're addicted to stats
Might as well face it, you're addicted to stats
Might as well face it, you're addicted to stats
Might as well face it, you're addicted to stats
Might as well face it, you're addicted to stats

EDIT: Hmm, this is the really old version. Have to see if I can find the newer, revised version.

<--- Guilty

When one looks in network places, and sees only two computers, and it makes one very sad, and causes one to solemnly vow that one will be sure to save enough money to upgrade and/or purchase another computer Very Soon (TM). ;)
