I feel like most good movies were all made in the 1990s, very sporadically do you see an amazing film since 2000. Looks like they're running out of ideas.
Remember that "mainstream success" is a goal-post that shifts every quarter-generation (if that is even a measurement of time....
😉 )
Back in the day you had less choices for entertainment. If a "good" movie came out, everyone knew about it, and "everyone" it seemed went to see it.
Now between the constant release of movies, tons of original cable series, Netflix, Xbox, PS3, PC, internet porn, Youtube, the never-ending availability of music, the inflation of the USD.......it is hard to gauge "success" for a filmmaker or movie in my book.
Entertainment is so split up now, and so watered down (Reality TV, movie re-makes that dont end) that using gross reciepts to gauge a movie just isnt as telling as it used to be. There are gems out there that dont get the mainstream recognition. I guess they are generally referred to as "cult classics".
On a side note, Tarantino is the man. If you didn't appreciate Cristoph Waltz's performance in Inglorious Basterds...go away.
