I hate it when people want to start talking to me about computers. One of my friends has very little clue about computers except what OS is running. So if you ask him what the specs on the computers in his home are, he'll answer me by saying something like "2 XP Home, 1 98, 1 Windows 3.1, etc."

Then theres a time when people get amazed by my computer stuff and they ask me what kind, I tell them I built it so I don't have to explain what the difference is between a Hard Drive and RAM. Then they ask me what parts, I'll tell them all the parts and then they tell me their's is faster since the clock speed is like .1ghz faster. I tell them theres more to it than just the cpu, but they never understand

Then theres people who have no clue what they're talking about. A kid in my English class told me that they run a firewall on their desktop. I asked him why they use it, he said because people hack it. So then I asked him if he has all the updates for his OS. He claims theres no need for it with a firewall. Then he says that his dad is a programmer and told me that he has an addon for Norton Personal Firewall which annoys the hacker by placing files on their hard drive that replicate, slowly taking up all the space it has. I told him thats not possibly since the hacker himself is probably behind some form of protection. He said it doesn't matter, and it goes on farther but in the end he thought I was making things up

Has this happened to any of you? I hate trying to have a talk with someone about computers that doesn't know much.

Oh yeah, thats why I joined this forum. Here, people actually know what they are talking about for the most part. I can actually carry on an intelligent discussion about computers without having nonsense like the cpu being the only thing determining speed.

i hate reading through long posts, just to get to the point.

j/k ;)

i don't mind it as much. Some people just don't know alot about computers. The only time it gets annoying is when they are too stubborn to admit they don't know as much as they think they do.

Happens to me all the time, except it's with telecom equipment rather than computer stuff.

They seem to think they have an idea as to whats going on, when they just sound like a moron. :p

I you weren't such a computer geek that wouldn't be as much a problem.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

my mom knows ms office programs and how to send emails, even is addicted to online shopping and banking as i am. anyhow, those are her limitations. she knows i'm the computer genius of the family, yet will argue with me and say that when i last changed the desktop wallpaper, this caused her favourite web site to go down. so anyways! try explaining to a stubborn gemini.

It's a lot easier to talk computers with someone that has some knowledge of it.

I wish people would take the time to learn such simple tasks such as updating drivers. Or possibly even installing their very own video card or something. I hate being beckoned for such minor things that everyone should know. But alas, it'll never happen. GG.

Ahh, first I'm 15. I can't really just not talk to them because they're good friends otherwise.

In reply to Kiyup, what is a computer geek in your dictionary? You don't have to be a geek to know a little more than the average person, as long as its not what a person does all t he time, they arne't a geek. Yeah, I like computers, their p arts, software, etc. but that doesn't make me a geek. I still go out to the park biking or something with friends almost each day since the weather has been good.

Kiyup, I'm not trying to say that your wrong ( but you are, hehe ;) ), but you ca n't call someone a geek based on one thing.

whenever that happens I usally ask why they are calling me if they know better, and why is their computer messed up and not mine? I don't mind fixing minor problems for people, the easier the better actually. When you can sit down and in 60 seconds or less fix a "problem" that has been driving them insane for months you look like da man, lol, and those people never question you again.....

I don't have a problem with talking to people who know less. In fact, I like talking to those kinds of people specifically because, by taking on your attitude, you promote the stereotype that computer people are antisocial iconoclastic a$$holes who can't be bothered with the "lesser" people and make it a lot harder for people to understand that mysterious beige box that sits underneath their desk. Also, there's much more satisfaction at seeing people grasp concepts and go off and learn on their own rather than scratch their head and come to you for a solution to everything. If tech people hoarded all their knowledge like misers, IT suffers because the common man wouldn't know what to do on his machine besides word and ppt, then we'd really have a slowdown in the way of new technologies eh? Do you think p2p would be such an issue if no one had spread the word about mp3 compression and ripping?

I've taught countless people in my free time why the early p4 isn't/wasn't really an improvement because a bubble in a 20-stage pipeline paired with a very small cache and immature prefetch and prediction is not a good formula for performance(dissuaded many p3 1.0 ghz owners from going 1.6 p4 this way). I've also taught people why adding RAM is 9 times out of 10, a better idea than a new cpu. Why cheap, early ddr was bad investment(if anyone remembers that). Even simple things like what the hell FSB is and why agp is better/worse than pci. Even computer economics works out well in explaining how a server based LAN is not a million dollar venture nowadays. Hell, if for no other reason than to explain how people should lie about their technicals better, it's a good idea. I'd tell your friend with the firewall that Norton wouldn't put out an addon to cripple hackers for 2 big reasons, it'd destroy their market and it'd be much simpler for some perl hacker to create a standalone daemon that did that with an IP than anything else and THAT might be a better lie for them/their parent to use because what they're using now ain't cuttin it. Maybe the reason they don't understand what you're explaining isn't really their fault?

Also, I guarantee at some point YOU will be that newb asking the stupid questions to someone who knows more than you, be it from a professor or one of the more reknowned people in the field. How would you like to be treated? Heck, you're posting on the forums for a site dedicated to spreading information about the computer technology in a free and clear manner.

Well since you're ranting I may as well join the club. I don't really care if people don't know about computers, unless that's the field they've chosen to work in...that's when in burns me up. I'm not talking about just not having enough experience and making incorrect statements, I'm talking about people that should really know better but for some reason they don't.

I was told by one of my co-workers that by installing Windows XP on a slow computer it will overclock the bus speed and burn up the hard drive. The scary part is that the person that made that comment goes on and on every day about stupid users...if that's not the pot calling the kettle black I don't know what is.

Being called/calling yourself a computer geek is generally considered a positive thing. Don't be ashamed of your geekiness ;)
