You know what I don't understand -- algebra class rant

Nocturnal

Lifer
The majority of my class doesn't understand what our senile 78 year old teacher is teaching us.

I hate to admit it but my teacher is nice and all but she's got to retire soon. I mean she's senile to say the least.

Anyway, I know for a fact that the majority of my class does not understand what she goes over. NOBODY asks questions. Why???

I want to, but I don't want to be looked upon as a stupid moron. When she asks us if we understand everyone just doesn't say anything and kinda just goes along.

I know they and I don't understand. Oh well, life is unfair.

Word.

That sucks. Find someone to help you. Are you in HS or college and which algebra, because it shouldn't be too difficult if you do your homework!!! 😛🙂

I am in a community college Elementary Algebra Math 24 is the course I'm taking.

I think I have ADD.

I was diagnosed but the medicine I take dont' help me whatsoever.

Even if I read the text book I sometimes don't understand it. The text book does not go into it very well.

Perhaps I'm stupid.

If this is algebra I, or even algebra 2, then read the textbook and teach yourself. It really isn't that hard.

Elementary Algebra Math sounds preatty damn easy...

How about you post a question you don't understand and maybe someone will help you 😀

To be totally honest it gets me depressed in a way. I wanna take Jiu Jitsu so that if anyone calls me a moron for asking questions I can armbar them so they won't ever tease me again.

It's like everything connects to each other. I have to take Jiu Jitsu because I can ask questions, after asking questions I need to do my homework.

Also what gets me is this:

When I do ask questions it's as if my teacher is in a rush. She makes me feel like she is in a rush. I can't sit there for an hour just to go over stuff. It's always "Ok I have to be somewhere at this time so I'm just letting you know."

It's irritating as hell!

I can't stand it. I think I'm going to flunk out of college.

I mean I'm stupid, so what, I'm not trying to gain attention or feel sorry for myself.

Nothing I can do. I just wanna know why does everything in life always have to be so crappy 🙁

I definately will because I know tons of you guys can take time to help me. Notfred has done that before.

If nobody in the class understands what she's teaching, and you ask, how does that make you a moron? Sounds like you don't understand, are afraid of asking, and placing the blame on her.

Also often times than not after I learn something I can easly forget how to put it together if the equation is backwards, it's hard for me to put it together if it's not in the same format as I originally learned. Of course that's how math works, but anyways, that's what I have a hard time with too.

I'm not blaming it on her, I'm just saying that when I do ask her for help, she makes me feel that I need to rush and learn it as quickly as possible. I know you're playing devil's advocate but if you were in my class you would see exactly what I'm talking about. Mind you, shes around 79-80 something years old still teaching a class. She moves extremely slow and often times than not goes off topic of what we're originally learning. She loves to skip steps when solving an equation just because she thinks "we know this stuff."

You want to take jjs so when you do ask a question, and somebody calls you a moron for asking a question, you can armbar them? Are you serious?

Sounds like you have self-esteem problem. Nobody is going to call you a moron... because more than likely, there's going to be some who don't understand as well. Do you call people morons when they ask the prof a question? I know i don't... well, some i do, but those are the ones that ask questions to suck up to the teacher more than to have questions they don't know answered.

Ok, so I'm afraid to ask questions. Anyone have tips to get over this? You know why I think I'll feel like a moron, remember when your teacher said "No question is a stupid question." Well I think they're wrong. Everyone likes to giggle and say sh1t like ahahah that dumb ass he doesn't understand that.

I'm anxious, I have an anxiety problem, and I often think the worse thoughts possible.

When I was in college level calculus, everyone in the class understood that going over the previous night's homework and asking questions was THE most important part of the class, and we basically made the instructor answer and explain. Of course, I took calculus classes at night, and the class was composed largely of adults who understood the psychology of teaching, and weren't willing to put up with any bovine poop.

My advice would be to start asking intelligent questions, and get other students to do the same. Insist upon your right to be educated.

You got that right, I do have a self-esteem problem. A big one too.

I wouldn't really armbar someone because they said I was a moron. But, if they insisted I was a moron and I told them to STFU and it escalated into a fight I would.

I guess it's also kinda hard because the com college I go to are filled with ghetto people. It's located in one of the more ghetto areas.

Ok here's a problem, I am doing substitution and finding out the what x and y are.

So the equation turns out to be indefinate or infinite solutions or something. Why is it infinate?

Ghetto does not necessarily equal stupid (though it can). Do other people in the class feel as you do? Have you spoken with them about it? Ghetto or not, you can still ask the instructor questions; if enough of you do, the instructor will be under considerable pressure to answer and properly explain.
