You know, in-person RPG gaming is fun

It makes you

-- leave your judgmental side at the door. Um, lots of the guys going to these things are *very* ordinary people, which is the first thing that is noticed when entering the room...

-- Kind of get to the original spirit of gaming which is like a social guided imagination among people. Most of the current game developers started with tabletop so they have that on their mind, while most current game fans probably have not played any tabletop RPG's.

Recommend any good table-top RPG's? In particular, I"m interested in tactical competitive strategy games, possibly with narrative possibility? I'm aware of Warhammer, for instance, but I am put off by the cost and time investment.

It definitely is. I was a pretty sought-after DM when I was a kid.

Great times.

Yeah, there's this depressing game shop at the local mall which I've walked by many times but never gone in...

I think I'm going to have to give it a shot. And game on pcs/consoles less.

LoL. You cant be serious. Why not just play basketball, golf, surfing, mountain biking, or take your car to the race track or something

Tactical....you might like miniatures-based war games. It's still gaming, but no individual characters really. Especially fun if you're into the painting figures/building models side of it. Micro Armor, Napoleonics, Mustangs & Messerschmitts are good examples.

Time investment is the rub of all in-person gaming. Fine when you're young, but hard to manage with adult commitments.

Warhammer is NOT a tabletop RPG. It is a tabletop miniature game. A tabletop RPG is D&D, Shadowrun, Star Wars RPG, etc.

Miniature games are completely different. There may be campaigns that last a LONG time, but there is no roll playing aspect. Further, warhammer is primarily a 2 player game with 1v1. There is no GM, there is no cooperative play (unless you set up some specific scenario).

So I am unsure of what you are truly interested in.

Make sure you spell role the right way but in D&D you do both. 😉

Actually, there are two varients - Warhammer Minatures and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. The latter is a tabletop RPG.
With regards to LARP - all the LARPs I've been to generally involved quite realistic looking weapons (not just pipe with foam on) and plenty of drinking in the evenings (and afternoons and even mornings!). Helps that one of my friends runs the in-character bar with several kinds of beer on tap. Actually great fun as long as you don't take it TOO seriously.

As to OP - depends on genre. Call of Cthulu is good horror/thriller. If you want swashbuckling adventures, give The 7th Sea a shot. If cyberpunk is more your style, Shadowrun could be worth a look. Or if you really don't want to play a true co-operative game, try Paranoia - the aim is to be able to shift the blame for everything that goes wrong onto someone else. Preferably after they've died so they can contradict you...

I always wanted to do more RPGs, but finding a group that wasn't a huge bunch of flakes has proved impossible. Plus now that I'm older I just don't have that much time uninterrupted.
